Best Scooter Rides in Bali: 8 Scenic Routes Worth the Trip

Renting a scooter in Bali isn’t just about getting from your villa to the beach club. Some of the island’s most beautiful places are best reached on two wheels, at your own pace, stopping wherever the view demands it. Here are eight of our favourite rides — from easy half-days to full-day adventures.

1. Ubud → Tegallalang → Kintamani

Time: 1–1.5 h one way · Difficulty: moderate (steady climb)

Start with coffee at the Tegallalang rice terraces before the crowds, then keep climbing north to the Kintamani ridge for views over Mount Batur and its crater lake. Bring a jacket — it gets cool up there. Want the sunrise version? See Mount Batur by scooter.

2. The Uluwatu cliff coast

Time: half day · Difficulty: easy to moderate (hills, good roads)

Loop the Bukit Peninsula: Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban, Melasti and Nyang Nyang, ending at Uluwatu Temple for sunset. Roads are wide but hilly — a bike with a bit of power helps. See scooter rental Uluwatu.

3. Sidemen valley

Time: full day from Ubud or Sanur · Difficulty: moderate

Green rice fields, weaving villages and Mount Agung on the horizon — this is the Bali many people imagine. Roads are narrow and quiet. Combine with Tirta Gangga water palace on the way to the east coast.

4. The Amed coast road

Time: half day from Amed · Difficulty: moderate (steep, narrow, some sharp bends)

A winding road along the far east coast, with black-sand bays, fishing boats and viewpoints over the sea and Mount Agung. Ride slowly — corners are tight and sometimes sandy. See scooter rental Amed.

5. Bedugul → Munduk

Time: full day · Difficulty: moderate to hard (mountain roads, fog)

Ulun Danu Beratan temple on its lake, the twin lakes viewpoint over Buyan and Tamblingan, cloud forest and the waterfalls around Munduk. Leave early and be off the mountain before dark. See Bedugul and Munduk.

6. Jatiluwih rice terraces

Time: 1.5–2 h from Canggu · Difficulty: easy to moderate

Wide, sweeping terraces that are part of Bali’s UNESCO-listed subak landscape. Quieter than Tegallalang and gorgeous in the morning. Combine with Tanah Lot on the way back for sunset. See scooter rental Tabanan.

7. Canggu → Tanah Lot → Pererenan backroads

Time: half day · Difficulty: easy

Escape the Canggu traffic through rice-field lanes to the sea temple of Tanah Lot. Perfect for your first few days. See Pererenan.

8. Sanur → Nusa Dua coastal ride

Time: half day · Difficulty: easy (with the toll road’s motorbike lane)

Cross the Bali Mandara toll road over the water — it has a dedicated motorbike lane and a small toll — and explore the calm beaches of Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa. See scooter rental Nusa Dua.

Which bike for which ride?

  • Easy coastal and town rides: Scoopy, Fazzio or Vario.
  • Mountains, two people, long days: NMAX or PCX.
  • Dirt tracks and off-road: a KLX — see dirt bike rental Bali.

Tips for long rides

  • Start early — light traffic, cooler air, better photos.
  • Download offline maps — see navigating Bali by scooter.
  • Fill up before the mountains and carry cash for parking and temple donations.
  • Bring a sarong for temples and a raincoat in the wet season.
