Navigating Bali by Scooter: Google Maps Tips, Offline Maps & Phone Mounts

Google Maps is your best friend on a Bali scooter — and the reason people end up on rice-field footpaths.
Tips
- Use two-wheeler mode, available in Indonesia — often shorter than car routes.
- Beware shortcuts: if the lane narrows sharply, gets steep or turns to dirt, turn back to the main road.
- Download offline maps: signal is weak around Bedugul, Munduk, Kintamani, West Bali and parts of Nusa Penida.
- Use a phone holder (ask the rental), set the route before you go and pull over to change it. Handling a phone while riding is dangerous and can be fined (checkpoints & fines).
- Carry a power bank; GPS drains batteries.
- Ask your villa for a shared location; many are on unnamed lanes.
Maps can be optimistic at rush hour — use our travel times table and avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark.
