Munduk, Bali

Scooter rental Munduk.

Munduk is a mountain village in North Bali surrounded by coffee and clove plantations, waterfalls and the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan. Roads are narrow, twisting and often misty, so a 125–160cc scooter with good brakes is the right choice.

Renting a scooter in Munduk: what to know

Munduk sits on a ridge between Lake Tamblingan and Bali's north coast, in Buleleng regency. It was a cool hill retreat in colonial times and today is known for homestays set among coffee, clove and nutmeg gardens. Its sights are scattered across slopes linked only by village roads, so scooter rental in Munduk is the most practical way to hop between waterfalls without depending on a driver.

Waterfalls are the main draw. Munduk Waterfall (also called Red Coral) and Melanting are close to the village and reached by short hikes from their car parks. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls near Wanagiri is a little further, with a steep access road at the end. Along the Wanagiri road several viewpoints look over Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan, and on the shore of Tamblingan you can hire a traditional wooden canoe with a local guide.

Roads around Munduk are narrow, full of sharp bends and often unfenced on the valley side. Many corners are blind, and pick-ups loaded with cloves or vegetables come the other way. That is why we recommend a Honda Vario 160 or Honda PCX over a 110cc, especially with a passenger. Check the brakes before setting off and use engine braking on the long descent from Wanagiri instead of riding the brakes.

There are three main approaches: from Bedugul via Pancasari and Wanagiri, from Lovina or Seririt via Banjar and Gesing, or from the west via Pupuan. The Bedugul route is the most popular from South Bali, taking roughly 2.5–3 hours from the airport. It fits neatly into a Bali scooter road trip if you want to spend a night or two in the mountains.

Scooter rental in Munduk itself is mostly offered by homestays and villagers, with limited models and prices from about IDR 80,000 per day. If you want a 150cc bike, it is safer to book from South Bali or from Lovina, about an hour below. Fuel stations up here are scarce; fill up in Seririt or Pancasari, although bottled petrol is sold at village shops.

In the rainy season (roughly November to March) waterfall trails get slippery and small landslides can block the edge of the road. Start early, avoid riding after dark and carry a rain poncho. Foreign riders must carry their home licence plus an International Driving Permit valid for motorcycles.
