Bali Scooter Road Trip Itinerary 2026: 1, 3 & 7 Days

Updated

A scooter road trip is one of the best ways to experience Bali. In a single day you can ride past rice terraces, misty highland forest and black-sand beaches, stopping wherever the view grabs you. But Bali is bigger and busier than it looks on a map: 40 km can take two hours if you cross Denpasar at rush hour. Below are tried-and-tested 1-day, 3-day and 7-day Bali scooter itineraries with distances, realistic riding times, where to sleep, fuel stops and which bike suits each route.

Ground rules for a Bali road trip

  • Plan on 25–35 km/h average, not 60. Traffic lights, villages, ceremonies, bends and photo stops keep it low.
  • Start early, ideally before 8 am. Mornings are cooler and clearer; highland fog often rolls in after midday.
  • Avoid riding mountain roads after dark — they are unlit, foggy and potholed. Arrive by 6 pm.
  • Rainy season (roughly November–March) brings heavy afternoon showers. Pack a raincoat and a dry bag.
  • Carry your documents: home licence plus an IDP with category A, and the bike's STNK. See licence requirements.

Which scooter for which route?

ScooterPrice / dayBest for
Honda ScoopyIDR 70–100kFlat South Bali, solo, short hops
Honda VarioIDR 80–120kDay trips, Ubud, light hills
Yamaha NMAXIDR 120–180k3–7 day trips, mountains, two-up with bags
Honda PCXIDR 130–200kLong distances, comfort, big storage
Kawasaki KLXIDR 250–400kRough roads and light off-road, experienced riders

For Kintamani, Bedugul, Munduk and Sidemen, pick a 150–160cc bike such as an NMAX, PCX or Vario 160. Bali's climbs are steep, and a 110cc scooter carrying two adults struggles uphill and overheats its brakes downhill. More in our best scooter to rent in Bali guide.

1-day itineraries

A. Bukit beaches and Uluwatu sunset (about 60 km, 3 hours riding)

Kuta or Seminyak to Melasti Beach (25 km, 50–60 min) for a morning swim; on to Padang Padang or Bingin (12 km, 30 min) for lunch; Uluwatu Temple (5 km, 15 min) by 5 pm for the Kecak dance; then Jimbaran (15 km, 40 min) for a seafood dinner. Mostly flat to gently hilly — a Scoopy or Vario is fine. Many people rent directly in Uluwatu to skip the Kuta traffic.

B. Classic Ubud (about 80 km return from Canggu, 3–4 hours riding)

Canggu to Ubud (35 km, 1–1.5 h), Monkey Forest and the market, Tegallalang rice terraces (10 km, 25 min), Tirta Empul (12 km, 25 min), then back before dark. It is a full day; staying a night in Ubud is far more relaxed.

C. Canggu to Tanah Lot sunset (about 30 km, 1.5 hours riding)

A gentle first ride: Batu Bolong beach, lunch in Pererenan, then Tanah Lot (12 km, 30–40 min) for sunset. Start with a scooter rental in Canggu.

3-day itinerary: Ubud, Kintamani and Bedugul

Day 1 — South Bali to Ubud (35–45 km, 1.5 h). Stop at the silver village of Celuk and woodcarving village of Mas. Walk the Campuhan Ridge in the late afternoon. Sleep in Ubud.

Day 2 — Kintamani loop (about 90 km, 3–3.5 h riding). Ubud to Tegallalang and Tirta Empul, then a long climb to Penelokan, Kintamani (25 km, 50 min) for lunch overlooking Mount and Lake Batur. Descend via Bangli to Penglipuran village (25 km, 45 min) and back to Ubud (30 km, 1 h). Fill up in Ubud first.

Day 3 — Ubud to Jatiluwih, Bedugul, Tanah Lot and Canggu (about 140 km, 5 h riding). The longest day: Jatiluwih UNESCO rice terraces (50 km, 1.5–2 h), Ulun Danu Beratan temple (25 km, 45 min), down to Tanah Lot (50 km, 1.5 h) and Canggu. Too much? Split it over two days with a night in cool Munduk or Bedugul.

7-day Bali loop

This anticlockwise loop covers the east, north and central highlands — roughly 450–500 km. Use an NMAX or PCX, especially two-up.

  • Days 3–4: Sidemen is a quiet valley facing Mount Agung. Reach Lempuyang by 6 am to beat the photo queue. Amed has snorkelling straight off the beach — see scooter rental in Amed if you linger.
  • Day 5: The north coast road is flat, quiet and hot. Refuel in Tulamben or Kubutambahan.
  • Day 6: Dolphins at dawn in Lovina, then climb into the hills. The Munduk road is twisty and often foggy — ride slowly. See Lovina rentals.
  • Day 7: Descend gradually via Jatiluwih and finish with a Tanah Lot sunset.

Fuel stops

Automatic scooters typically do around 35–45 km per litre with 4–7 litre tanks, so a full tank lasts roughly 150–250 km — less on climbs. Fill up every morning and whenever the gauge hits half. Pertamina stations exist in every regency town; villages sell bottled fuel or "Pertamini" pumps at a small premium and variable quality. In October 2026, Pertalite costs about IDR 10,000 per litre and Pertamax IDR 15,950. Details in our Bali fuel guide.

Safety on the road

  • Wear a proper helmet with the strap fastened, rider and passenger.
  • Use both brakes on long descents and avoid dragging them constantly.
  • Watch for sand and gravel on bends, especially after rain.
  • Do not ride long distances with a heavy backpack; leave big luggage at your first hotel.
  • Tell the rental you are touring the island — some limit where bikes can go — and save their number. Tyre repair stalls are in nearly every village.
