Renting a scooter in Bedugul: what to know

Bedugul is the popular name for the highland area around Lake Beratan, covering the villages of Candikuning, Baturiti and Pancasari on the border of Tabanan and Buleleng regencies. At roughly 1,200 metres above sea level it is cool, frequently misty and green with vegetable, flower and strawberry farms. The sights are spread out and public transport is almost non-existent, which makes scooter rental in Bedugul the most flexible way to explore at your own pace.

The star attraction is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan on the shore of Lake Beratan in Candikuning, which appears to float on the water when the lake is high. Close by are the vast Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali), where you can ride inside with a vehicle ticket, the Candikuning market selling fruit and flowers, and a row of pick-your-own strawberry farms along the Candikuning–Pancasari road. The Handara gate in Pancasari is a favourite photo stop; arrive early to skip the queue.

The terrain is the main reason to choose your bike carefully. The road from Mengwi through Baturiti climbs continuously with tight hairpins, and the stretch towards Wanagiri is steep. A 110cc will make it solo, but with a passenger it struggles uphill and works its brakes hard on the way down. We recommend a Honda Vario 160 or Yamaha NMAX with strong brakes. Use engine braking on long descents instead of holding the brake lever the whole way.

Weather is the second factor. Thick fog can roll in quickly, especially after midday, and rain is possible almost all year, more so from November to March. Turn on your headlight, slow down and leave extra space behind vegetable trucks. Wet roads near the lake can be slippery with moss and mud from the farms. Local scooter rental in Bedugul is limited, so many travellers rent in South Bali or Ubud and ride up. Expect prices from about IDR 80,000 per day for a bike suited to mountain roads. The airport is ±55 km away, roughly 1.5–2 hours, and Ubud about 1.5 hours. If you travel with young children or lots of luggage, a car with driver is easier for transfer days, keeping the scooter for daily exploring.

As everywhere in Bali, foreign riders must carry their home licence plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Parking at the main sights is managed officially for a small fee. Heading further north? Bedugul is the natural stop before descending to Lovina on the coast.
