Cheap Car Rental in Bali: 9 Honest Ways to Pay Less (Without Getting Burned)

Cheap is great. Cheap and then stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery is not. Here’s how to genuinely pay less for a rental car in Bali — and how to spot the “cheap” offers that end up costing more.

1. Pick the smallest car that fits

A Honda Brio or Toyota Agya costs roughly IDR 200–300k a day — often IDR 100k less than a 7-seater — and it’s easier to park. For two people, it’s all you need. Four adults with big suitcases? Then you’ll want an Avanza.

2. Rent by the week or month

Daily rates are the most expensive way to rent. Weekly rates usually knock a good chunk off per day, and monthly rentals can bring it down by 40–50%. See monthly car rental in Bali.

3. Travel in shoulder season

July–August and Christmas–New Year are peak. If you can, come in May–June or September–October: good weather, more cars, better prices. February–March is cheapest but wettest.

4. Book early for peak dates

In peak season the cheap cars go first. If your dates fall around Christmas or school holidays, book a few weeks ahead.

5. Mix car and scooter

Use a car only for the days you need it — airport runs, the big Ubud or Kintamani day — and a scooter for everything else. A scooter costs roughly IDR 60–120k a day. Our scooter or car? guide helps you decide.

6. Split it

A 7-seater at IDR 350k a day split five ways is IDR 70k each — cheaper than most Grab rides to Ubud.

7. Ask for the total price

The headline rate isn’t the price. Ask: is delivery included? Any deposit? Fuel policy? Insurance? A quote that looks IDR 50k cheaper can easily cost more after fees.

8. Keep running costs down

  • Fill up at Pertamina stations, not bottle sellers on the roadside.
  • Use the Bali Mandara toll road at rush hour — the fee is small, the fuel and time saved aren’t.
  • Avoid peak traffic (4–7 pm) when you can.
  • Parking is cheap (IDR 5–10k), but beach-club parking can be steep; park nearby and walk.

9. Don’t pay upfront for a deal that’s too good

A 7-seater for IDR 150k a day, “pay the full amount today to secure it” — that’s the classic way tourists lose money. Pay on delivery instead: the SiapPergi car catalogue (our sister site) has fixed prices from around IDR 310k a day at the time of writing, delivered, with no deposit up front.
