Mount Batur Sunrise by Scooter: Route, Timing & Safety Tips

The Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of Bali’s bucket-list experiences — and riding there yourself, with the volcano and lake appearing as the sky lightens, is something you won’t forget. It also means riding a mountain road in the dark at 3 am. Here’s how to do it well.
Is it a good idea?
For confident riders with a few days of Bali riding behind them: yes. For beginners or anyone who hasn’t ridden at night in Bali yet: book a tour with pick-up instead, or stay the night before in Kintamani or Toya Bungkah so you only ride in daylight.
Route and riding times
| From | Approx. riding time | Leave by |
|---|---|---|
| Ubud | 1–1.5 h | 2:30–3:00 am |
| Canggu / Seminyak | 2–2.5 h | 1:30–2:00 am |
| Sanur | 1.5–2 h | 2:00 am |
| Kintamani / Toya Bungkah | 10–30 min | 3:30 am |
From Ubud, the usual route heads north through Tegallalang and Pujung up to the Kintamani ridge, then down to the trailheads near Toya Bungkah or Pura Jati. Treks usually start around 4 am to reach the summit for sunrise. Check exact times with your guide.

Our honest advice for South Bali
From Canggu or Seminyak, a 2-hour ride in the dark followed by a 2-hour climb and a ride back is a very long, tiring day. Many riders do the trip in two parts: ride up to Kintamani in the afternoon, sleep there, trek at dawn, and ride back in daylight. It’s safer and you actually enjoy the views. See scooter rental Kintamani.
What bike?
The climb up to Kintamani is long and steep in places. A Scoopy will get one person up fine; for two people, choose a NMAX or PCX — more power on the hills and better brakes on the way down. Check brakes and lights properly before you go.
What to wear
- A warm jacket and long trousers — it can be 12–18°C at the top before sunrise, and colder with wind chill on the bike.
- Gloves, if you have them.
- Proper shoes with grip for the volcanic gravel trail.
- A head torch for the trek (most guides provide one).

Guides and parking
The trek is typically done with a local guide, and you’ll need to arrange one in advance — your accommodation can usually help, or you can book through a local guide association near the trailhead. There’s parking at the trailhead for a small fee. Don’t leave anything valuable on the bike.
Safety on the mountain road
- Fill up the night before — stations on the way may be closed at 2 am.
- Fog and drizzle are common near Kintamani. Slow down and use your low beam.
- Sand and gravel on corners near the lava fields.
- Dogs on village roads in the dark — ride steadily, don’t swerve.
- Tour vans come down fast after sunrise — keep left and let them pass.

After the sunrise
Combine the ride back with a breakfast overlooking the caldera, the hot springs near Toya Bungkah, the Tegallalang rice terraces or Tirta Empul temple. More route ideas in best scooter rides in Bali.
