Bali with kids is wonderful — and a lot easier with your own car. No squeezing a family of five into a taxi, no wrestling car seats in and out of Grab cars, and space for the beach bag, the floaties and the nappy bag. Here’s how to pick the right car and plan days that keep everyone happy.

Note: with all seven seats in use, an Avanza fits only small bags. For airport runs with suitcases, fold the third row or go one size up.
Child seats
Not every Bali rental car comes with a child seat, and the law isn’t enforced the way it is at home — but your kids are just as precious here. Ask for a child seat when you book, and check it’s the right size and properly anchored at handover. Many families bring their own travel booster. Self-drive or with a driver?
With small kids, a driver is a game changer: you can sit in the back, hand out snacks and actually see the rice terraces. Drivers also know family-friendly stops with clean toilets. For a 10–12-hour day with fuel in South Bali, expect roughly IDR 550–700k for an Avanza and IDR 750–950k for an Innova. Details in car rental with driver.
Kid-friendly day trips by car
- Ubud: Monkey Forest (keep snacks hidden!), Tegallalang rice terraces, a swing or a cooking class. Leave early to beat traffic.
- Bedugul: Ulun Danu Beratan temple on the lake, the botanical gardens and strawberry farms. Cooler air — bring jumpers.
- Kintamani: lunch with a volcano view over Mount Batur and the lake.
- Sanur & Nusa Dua: calm beaches, flat paths for strollers and bikes, easy parking.
- Tanah Lot: sea temple at sunset — hold little hands near the rocks.
Plan shorter days than you would as adults; 2–3 stops is plenty with kids. Travel times are in Bali travel times.
Practical family tips
- Check the rear air-con works — the back gets hot fast.
- Keep water, wipes, a sick bag and a towel in the car. Mountain roads are winding.
- Avoid the 4–7 pm rush, especially around Kuta and the airport.
- Choose a villa with car parking — some Canggu and Ubud villas are scooter-only.
