Tabanan, Bali

Scooter rental Tabanan.

Tabanan is Bali's rice bowl, home to Tanah Lot temple and the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces. Beaches like Kedungu, Nyanyi and Yeh Gangga are still quiet, and the sights are far apart — a scooter is the most affordable way to see them.

Renting a scooter in Tabanan: what to know

Tabanan is the regency in south-west Bali stretching from the southern coast up to the slopes of Mount Batukaru. It is known as Bali's rice bowl thanks to its huge rice fields and the still-working subak irrigation system. Tabanan town itself is quiet, but the attractions are spread out, from the beaches of Kediri to the terraces of Penebel. That is why scooter rental in Tabanan gives you the freedom to move between them without a fixed tour.

Tanah Lot, the sea temple on its rock outcrop, is the most famous sight and gets very busy at sunset. To the west lie Kedungu, popular with beginner and intermediate surfers, the quiet black-sand Nyanyi beach, and Yeh Gangga, known for horse rides along the shore. Access roads to these beaches are partly narrow and cut through rice fields, so a scooter is far more practical than a car.

Up north, the Jatiluwih rice terraces are part of Bali's UNESCO World Heritage subak landscape. The route runs through Penebel and keeps climbing, with a few steep pitches near the end. For this ride a 125–160cc scooter such as the Honda Vario is more comfortable, especially two-up. For the flat coastal roads a 110cc like the Honda Scoopy is plenty. Jatiluwih charges an entrance fee and has official scooter parking.

Approximate riding times from Tabanan town: Tanah Lot ±25–30 minutes, Kedungu ±30 minutes, Jatiluwih ±45–60 minutes. The airport is ±1–1.5 hours away depending on traffic in Kerobokan and Mengwi. Many visitors stay in Canggu and ride out to Tanah Lot, only about 30–40 minutes away. The main Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway runs through Tabanan and is heavy with trucks and buses; avoid it when you can.

Scooter rental in Tabanan starts from about IDR 70,000 per day for a 110cc automatic, with delivery to villas around Kediri, Beraban and Kedungu. There are fewer rental shops in town than in South Bali, so book ahead if you want a bigger bike. Full rates are in our Bali scooter rental price guide.

Foreign riders must carry their home licence plus an International Driving Permit covering motorcycles. In the rainy season, rice-field lanes can turn muddy and slippery; slow down and use your headlight if you ride back after sunset.
