Getting Around Bali for Seniors (60+): Drivers, Cars, Scooters & Comfort Tips

Short answer: for most travellers over 60, the most comfortable way to see Bali is a car with a private driver — around IDR 650k–950k for a 10–12 hour day. If you like to drive, an automatic MPV works well outside rush hour. Scooters are only a good idea if you already ride regularly at home; check your travel insurance age limits first.

Bali is wonderful for older travellers — gentle beach towns, rich culture, great food and excellent value. The challenge is getting around: heat, traffic, steps at temples and roads full of scooters. With the right transport, it’s easy.

Option 1: a private driver

A driver picks you up at your hotel, waits while you explore, knows where the toilets and shady cafés are, and drops you off right at the entrance. Choose an Innova for extra legroom and an easier step in and out. Many drivers speak good English and double as informal guides. You can book by the day, half day, or just for transfers. See car rental with driver and day trip itineraries.

Option 2: self-drive car

If you’re confident and used to driving on the left (or adapt quickly), an automatic rental car gives you freedom. Tips:

  • Pick a higher-seated MPV like the Xpander — easier to get in and out of than a small hatchback.
  • Drive between 9 am and 3 pm to avoid rush hours — see Bali traffic.
  • Avoid night driving on unlit roads.
  • Bring your licence and an IDP — see IDP in Bali.

Option 3: a scooter — only if you ride at home

There’s no legal upper age limit for riding a scooter in Bali. But Bali traffic is demanding: quick reactions, steep hills and sudden obstacles. If you ride a motorcycle or scooter regularly at home, a light, low scooter like the Fazzio or Scoopy is easy to handle in quiet areas such as Sanur or Nusa Dua. If you haven’t ridden for years, Bali is not the place to restart. See is it safe to ride a scooter in Bali?

Insurance: check the age limits

Many travel insurance policies have age bands or upper age limits, and some exclude scooter riding or require a valid motorcycle licence. Read the policy before you go, declare medical conditions and make sure emergency medical evacuation is covered. More in does travel insurance cover scooter accidents?

Where to stay for easy getting around

  • Sanur — flat, a long beachfront path, calm traffic, good restaurants. A favourite with older travellers.
  • Nusa Dua — resort enclave with wide roads and a beach promenade; a driver is handy for trips out.
  • Ubud — culture and scenery, but hilly with uneven pavements; stay close to the centre or use a driver.
  • Avoid basing yourself in the busiest parts of Canggu if you want calm streets.

Pacing your days

  • Start early, rest in the hottest hours, and plan one main sight per half day.
  • Temples often have steps — Lempuyang and Besakih involve long climbs; Tanah Lot and Uluwatu are easier.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medications in the car.
  • Bali has good international clinics and hospitals in the south — see hospitals and clinics.
