Scooter Injury in Bali: What to Do, Hospitals, Clinics & Road Rash

Nobody plans to need this page. But if you or a friend comes off a scooter in Bali, knowing what to do in the first hour makes a real difference — for your health and for your insurance claim.
Right after a fall
- Get out of the traffic if you can move safely. Turn off the engine.
- Check for injuries — head, neck, back, and anything that hurts when you move.
- Call for help if it’s serious: 112 is Indonesia’s general emergency number; 118 or 119 for an ambulance. In practice, locals often help faster — and Grab or a taxi to a hospital can be quicker than waiting for an ambulance for non-critical injuries.
- Photograph the scene, the bike and any other vehicle when it’s safe to do so.
Where to go
Serious injuries
Head to one of the larger hospitals with emergency departments in Denpasar, Kuta/Sunset Road, Nusa Dua or Jimbaran. Bali has both a major public referral hospital in Denpasar and several international-standard private hospitals; private hospitals are used to foreign patients and travel insurers but are more expensive.
Minor injuries
For cuts, grazes and sprains, 24-hour clinics in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud and Sanur can clean wounds, stitch and give tetanus shots. Your villa or hotel will know the nearest one.

Road rash: take it seriously
In Bali’s heat and humidity, grazes get infected quickly. Have them properly cleaned the same day — grit left in a wound is a common cause of infection. Keep wounds clean and covered, avoid swimming in the sea or pools until they’ve healed, and see a doctor if a wound gets red, hot, swollen or smelly.
Call your insurer early
Many travel insurers need you to contact their emergency assistance line before or soon after treatment, especially for hospital admissions. They may arrange payment directly with the hospital. Keep every receipt and ask for a medical report. Remember the conditions — licence, helmet, no alcohol — in does travel insurance cover scooter accidents?
Dealing with the rental
Tell the rental what happened and send photos. Agree how the bike will be collected and repaired. Damage to the bike is usually a separate issue from your medical costs. See accident and damage: what to do and damage costs.
If another person is involved
Stay calm, check everyone is OK, take photos and contact details. For anything beyond a minor scrape, involve the police and your rental. Avoid agreeing to large cash settlements on the spot without advice.
Prevention
- Helmet strapped, every ride.
- Closed shoes and long sleeves — see what to wear.
- Slow down on sand and gravel.
- No riding after drinking, no mountain roads at night.
