Are automatic cars available in Bali?
Yes. Most popular rental models — Honda Brio, Toyota Agya, Toyota Avanza, Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Innova and the big SUVs — come in automatic versions. In Indonesia, automatic is commonly called “matic” (manual is “manual”), so use that word when you book.

How to make sure you get an automatic
- Write “automatic (matic)” clearly in your booking message.
- Ask the rental to confirm it in writing on WhatsApp.

Tips for driving an automatic in Bali
- Right-hand drive: the gear selector is on your left and the indicator stalk is often on the right. Expect to turn on the wipers a few times.
- Steep descents (Kintamani, Bedugul, the roads down to beaches in Uluwatu): shift to a low gear (L, 2, or B on some models) to let the engine brake instead of riding the brakes.
- Steep, narrow hill starts are where automatics shine — hold the brake, release gently and let the car creep.
- Traffic: stop-and-go in Canggu or Seminyak is far less tiring without a clutch.
