Bali Traffic Guide: Rush Hours, Worst Jams & When to Ride

Bali’s traffic surprises almost everyone. A 10 km ride can take 20 minutes at 10 am and an hour at 5 pm. Once you know the patterns, though, you can plan around them and spend far less time stuck behind trucks.
Daily rush hours
- Morning: about 7–9 am — school runs and commuters, especially around Denpasar, Kerobokan and the bypass.
- Evening: about 4–7 pm — the worst period in South Bali, combining commuters, tourists heading to sunset spots and delivery traffic.
- Best windows: roughly 9–11 am, early afternoon, and after 8 pm in town.
The notorious hotspots
Canggu
Narrow village roads carrying city-level traffic. Batu Bolong, Berawa and the roads linking them to Kerobokan jam up badly in the late afternoon. The famous shortcut roads help, but everyone knows them.
Kerobokan, Seminyak and Kuta
Jalan Raya Kerobokan, Jalan Kayu Aya (Oberoi), Jalan Legian and Sunset Road slow to a crawl around sunset and in the evening.
Ngurah Rai Bypass and airport area
The main artery between the airport, Sanur, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua. Busy with trucks and buses all day; very slow at peak times.
Ubud
The centre is a web of one-way streets that clog up with tour vans in the middle of the day. Arrive early or park outside the centre.

Seasonal and special traffic
- Peak season (July–August, Christmas–New Year, Chinese New Year, Indonesian school holidays) — expect everything to take longer. See peak season.
- Ceremonies and processions can close roads for an hour or two — see ceremonies and road closures.
- Heavy rain slows everything and floods some roads in South Bali.
How to beat the traffic
- Start long trips early — before 8 am.
- Check the Google Maps traffic layer before leaving.
- Use the Bali Mandara toll road for airport–Nusa Dua–Sanur trips. See Bali toll road guide.
- Base yourself near what you’ll do most — don’t commute Canggu–Uluwatu daily.
- For short trips in jams, a scooter is much faster than a car.
Scooter or car in traffic?
Scooters filter through jams and park anywhere, which is why most people use them in South Bali. Cars are more comfortable for families and long trips but much slower at peak times. Compare in scooter or car rental in Bali? Typical riding times are in Bali scooter travel times.
Riding safely in heavy traffic
- Keep left and expect scooters on both sides.
- Don’t weave aggressively between trucks.
- Short horn taps are normal — “I’m here”.
- Read Bali traffic etiquette and driving on the left.
