Does Travel Insurance Cover Scooter Accidents in Bali? Read This First

A scooter crash in Bali can mean a hospital bill of several thousand dollars — more if you need surgery or a flight home. Many travellers assume their travel insurance has them covered. Often it doesn’t, and they find out in a hospital in Denpasar. Here’s what to check before you rent.
The short answer
Travel insurance can cover medical costs from a scooter accident in Bali, but usually only if all of these are true: your policy includes motorcycle/moped riding (often as an add-on), you hold a licence valid for that bike, you were wearing a helmet, you weren’t affected by alcohol or drugs, and the bike was within the policy’s engine-size limit. Miss one, and the insurer can refuse the claim.
The six conditions insurers look at
1. Is motorbike riding covered at all?
Some policies exclude motorcycles completely, some include small scooters as standard, and many offer it as an “adventure” or “motorcycle” add-on. Read the product disclosure statement or policy wording — not just the marketing page — and search for “motorcycle”, “moped” and “scooter”.
2. Your licence
This is the big one. Most insurers require you to hold a licence valid for motorcycles both at home and in the country you’re riding in. In Indonesia that means your home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit showing the motorcycle category, or an Indonesian SIM C. A car licence alone usually isn’t enough. See how to get an IDP for Bali.
3. Engine size
Policies often cap cover at 125cc or 150cc. A Scoopy, Beat or Fazzio is fine almost everywhere; an NMAX (155cc) or PCX (160cc) can fall just outside some limits. An XMAX or KLX may need specific cover. Check before you choose your bike — our scooter comparison lists engine sizes.
4. Helmet
Not wearing a helmet is one of the most common reasons claims are rejected. Strap it on, every ride. See Bali helmet rules.
5. Alcohol and drugs
Almost every policy excludes accidents where you were under the influence. In practice, hospital records can mention alcohol, so even “a couple of beers” can sink a claim.
6. Riding as a passenger
Passengers are sometimes treated differently from riders. If you’ll mostly be on the back, check what the wording says about pillion passengers.

What travel insurance usually does NOT cover
- Damage to the rental scooter. Most travel policies exclude damage to motor vehicles you’re renting. That’s between you and the rental.
- Third-party vehicle damage — personal liability sections often exclude motor vehicles.
- Theft of the scooter. Again, usually excluded. See scooter theft in Bali.
What about the rental’s own insurance?
Some rentals offer a damage waiver or “insurance” for a small daily fee. It typically limits what you pay if the bike is damaged, but has its own excess and conditions — and it’s not medical cover. Our Bali scooter rental insurance guide explains what these really cover.
Before you ride: a quick checklist
- Find the motorcycle section of your policy and screenshot it.
- Add the motorcycle option if needed.
- Get your IDP with the motorcycle category before you fly.
- Pick a bike within the engine limit.
- Save your insurer’s 24/7 emergency number in your phone.
- Agree with your rental, in writing, what happens if the bike is damaged.
If you have an accident
Get medical help first. Then call your insurer’s emergency assistance line early — many need to approve hospital treatment. Keep every receipt, the medical report and photos of the scene, and tell your rental. Our accident and damage guide walks through the next steps.
Rent from a rental that takes this seriously
Good rentals check your licence, give you proper helmets and put the terms in writing. Scooters in the SiapPergi catalogue come with two helmets and a raincoat, delivered to your villa, and you pay only after checking the bike.

Frequently asked questions
Does travel insurance cover scooter accidents in Bali?
Often yes for medical costs, but only if your policy includes motorbike riding, you hold a valid motorcycle licence (plus IDP), wore a helmet, were sober, and the bike was within the engine-size limit.
Do I need an International Driving Permit for my insurance to work in Bali?
Usually yes. Most insurers require you to be licensed to ride in the country you are in. For tourists in Indonesia that means a home motorcycle licence plus an IDP with the motorcycle category.
Does travel insurance pay for damage to a rental scooter?
Usually not. Damage to rented motor vehicles is a common exclusion — agree damage terms with the rental in writing.
Is a 155cc NMAX covered by travel insurance?
It depends on your policy. Some cap cover at 125cc or 150cc, which an NMAX or PCX can exceed. Check the wording before you rent.
