One-Way Car Rental in Bali: Pick Up in One Place, Drop Off in Another

Short answer: yes. Most Bali car rentals deliver and collect cars anywhere in South and Central Bali, so “one-way” simply means you pick up at one address and drop off at another — for example, collect at the airport and leave the car at your hotel in Ubud, or start in Canggu and drop it at the airport before your flight. Within South Bali this is often free or IDR 50,000–150,000; far drop-offs like Amed or Lovina cost more.

Unlike big international brands with fixed branches, most Bali rentals are local businesses that bring the car to you. That makes one-way trips easy — as long as you agree the details before you set off.
Popular one-way routes
| Route | Why people do it | Typical drop-off fee |
|---|---|---|
| Airport → Canggu / Seminyak | Pick up on arrival, keep the car, rental collects it at your villa | usually free |
| Ubud → Airport | Drive down on departure day, leave the car at arrivals parking | free–IDR 100k |
| Airport → Uluwatu / Nusa Dua | Short hop via the toll road | usually free |
| Canggu → Amed / Tulamben | East Bali road trip, fly or take a transfer back | IDR 150k–300k |
| Ubud → Lovina / Munduk | North Bali stay at the end of the trip | IDR 150k–300k |
| Anywhere → Sanur / Padang Bai harbour | Catch a fast boat to Nusa Penida, Gili or Lombok | free–IDR 150k |
Fees are typical ranges; each rental sets its own. The further the drop-off is from the rental’s base, the more they charge, because someone has to travel to collect the car.
How a one-way rental works
- Book with both addresses. Give the exact pickup and drop-off addresses (or Google Maps pins) and the times.
- Agree the drop-off fee in writing on WhatsApp before the rental starts.
- Handover: photograph and video the car, fuel gauge and odometer. Use our car handover checklist.
- On drop-off day, message the rental an hour before you arrive so someone is there to meet you.
- Return check: walk around the car with the staff member, take the same photos again, and get a WhatsApp message confirming everything is fine.

Leaving the car at the airport
Airport drop-offs are very common. Usually the staff member meets you at the departures or arrivals parking area, takes the key and you walk straight to check-in. Two tips: allow 15 minutes extra for traffic around the airport (see Bali traffic guide), and settle any fuel or parking payments in advance so you aren’t counting cash at the terminal. Parking tickets inside the airport are usually paid by the renter until the hand-over.
Fuel, tolls and late returns
- Fuel: most cars go out with a certain level and must come back at the same level. Fill up at a Pertamina station near the drop-off — see the Bali fuel guide.
- Tolls: the Bali Mandara toll road needs an e-money card. Ask if one is in the car. See Bali toll road guide.
- Late returns: a day is usually 24 hours. Many rentals allow 1–2 hours’ grace; after that you may pay half or a full extra day. Agree this upfront.
When a driver makes more sense
If you only need to get from A to B with luggage — say, from Ubud to Amed — a one-way private transfer with a driver can cost about the same as a self-drive one-way rental plus the drop-off fee, and you don’t need to drive the mountain roads yourself. See car rental with driver and Bali airport transport.
Scooter instead?
One-way also works for scooters within South Bali — see one-way scooter rental. For luggage, though, a car is the only sensible option; read carrying luggage on a scooter.

How much is a one-way drop-off fee in Bali?
Often free within South Bali, around IDR 50,000–150,000 for Ubud and the airport, and about IDR 150,000–300,000 for far areas like Amed or Lovina.
Can I leave the rental car at the airport when I fly home?
