Bali Airport Transport 2026: To Canggu, Ubud & Seminyak

Updated

The moment you walk out of arrivals at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, you face the same question as everyone else: what is the easiest, fairest way to reach my hotel or villa? There is a row of taxi counters, plenty of drivers offering rides, and ride-hailing apps that do not always let you book from the kerb. Without a plan, it is easy to overpay or spend a long time waiting in the heat.

This guide walks through every realistic option for Bali airport transport in 2026: the official airport taxi, a pre-booked private driver, Grab and Gojek, a scooter delivered to the airport and a rental car, with or without a driver. You will also find approximate distances and travel times to Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, plus luggage tips. All costs below are general ranges, not official fares, and they vary with time of day, season and negotiation.

Distances and travel times from the airport

The airport sits in Tuban, on the narrow neck of land between Kuta and Jimbaran. South Bali is close on the map, but traffic can turn short distances into long rides, especially in the late afternoon and in high season.

DestinationDistance (approx.)Travel timeNotes
Kuta±5 km15–30 minClosest, busy at rush hour
Jimbaran±6 km15–30 minVia bypass or ring road
Seminyak±10 km30–60 minSunset Road often congested
Nusa Dua±12 km20–40 minToll road option
Uluwatu±20 km40–75 minHilly, Jimbaran bottlenecks
Canggu±20 km45–90 minDepends heavily on arrival time
Sanur±15 km25–45 minToll road and bypass
Ubud±37 km±1.5 hours (or more)Via bypass and Gianyar

If you land between roughly 4 pm and 7 pm, build in extra time. On a busy day the run to Canggu can take well over an hour.

1. Official airport taxi

Both the domestic and international arrivals halls have official airport taxi counters. You name your destination, pay a fixed fare (usually zone based) and are walked to the car. It is simple: no haggling, a car is ready immediately and you know the price upfront.

The downside is cost. Airport taxi fares are generally higher than ride-hailing apps or a driver you book yourself. Expect a fare in the low hundreds of thousands of rupiah to Kuta or Seminyak and considerably more to Canggu or Ubud. Check the posted fare list before paying and keep your receipt. Avoid unofficial offers from people approaching you inside the terminal.

2. Pre-booked private driver

For families and groups, a pre-booked airport pick-up is often the most relaxed choice. The driver waits at arrivals with a name sign, helps with bags and takes you straight to your villa. Prices are often similar to or below the airport taxi, especially for longer trips such as Ubud.

You can also pick the vehicle to match your luggage: a small car for two people with two cases, an Innova or Xpander for a family of five with surfboards, or a HiAce for a big group. Many travellers combine the pick-up with a full day of car rental with driver, stopping for lunch in Jimbaran before check-in. Ask in advance whether airport parking is included.

3. Grab and Gojek from the airport

Grab and Gojek both operate in Bali and are often the cheapest car option. At the airport, however, app pick-ups are usually only allowed at designated pick-up points, not directly outside arrivals. These points can move, so follow the in-app instructions and terminal signs, and expect a short walk with your bags.

  • Fares surge when demand is high, such as late evening or when several flights land together.
  • Airport or parking surcharges may be added in the app.
  • App cars are usually small hatchbacks or compact MPVs, so more than two large suitcases can be a problem.
  • Some destination areas (parts of Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua) restrict app pick-ups because of agreements with local transport cooperatives. Drop-offs are generally fine, but for your return trip you may need another arrangement.

4. Scooter delivered to the airport

Many rental shops will deliver a scooter to the airport or a nearby car park so you can ride straight to your accommodation. It suits solo travellers and couples with a backpack staying in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak or Jimbaran. See options on our Bali airport scooter rental page.

It is not ideal if you have a large suitcase, are exhausted after a long-haul flight, are heading far (Ubud or Amed, especially at night or in rain) or do not hold a valid licence. Foreign visitors need a motorcycle licence from home plus an International Driving Permit; see Bali scooter licence requirements. A common approach is to take a car on arrival day and have the scooter delivered to your villa the next morning. For most people a Scoopy or Vario is plenty.

5. Self-drive rental car from the airport

If you are comfortable in dense traffic and hold a valid licence plus IDP, a self-drive car handed over at the airport can be good value for families. A Brio suits two people, while an Avanza or Xpander fits four to six with luggage. Handovers happen in the car park, so agree a meeting point, photograph the car, check the fuel level and confirm who pays airport parking. Read our self-drive car rental guide for deposits and requirements.

Cost comparison (general ranges)

  • Airport taxi: fixed zone fares, usually the most expensive car option but zero preparation.
  • Private pick-up: often similar to or slightly below the taxi, with a meet-and-greet.
  • Grab/Gojek: usually the cheapest car option, subject to surge pricing and a walk to the pick-up point.
  • Car with driver for the day: roughly Rp 550,000–950,000 for 10–12 hours depending on the vehicle, worthwhile if you sightsee on arrival day.
  • Scooter delivered: the normal daily rate (a Scoopy is about Rp 70,000–100,000), sometimes plus a delivery fee.

Luggage tips

  1. Count suitcases, not just passengers. A city car fits about two large cases.
  2. Surfboards and bikes need extra space or a roof rack, so mention them when booking.
  3. Keep valuables in a small bag on you: passport, phone and wallet.
  4. Have your full address and a map pin ready. Many villas in Canggu and Ubud are down narrow lanes.
  5. Carry a little cash for tips, parking and small purchases.

Before you land

Foreign visitors must pay the Bali tourist levy of Rp 150,000 per person, in force since 14 February 2024, online through the official Love Bali website or app before travelling or on arrival. Domestic tourists are exempt. Also avoid Nyepi: for 24 hours on the Balinese Day of Silence (usually in March, date varies) the whole island, including the airport, shuts down. In the rainy season (roughly November to March) heavy downpours slow traffic, so a car is far more comfortable than a scooter on arrival; see our rainy season riding guide.

Around 37 km, which typically takes about 1.5 hours by car, longer in rush hour or heavy rain.
