Carrying Luggage on a Scooter in Bali: What Fits & Smarter Options

You’ll see locals carrying gas bottles, ladders and three crates of chickens on one scooter. That doesn’t mean your 23 kg suitcase belongs on your rental. Here’s what realistically fits — and how to move your bags without risking a crash.
What fits on a rental scooter
- A backpack on your back — up to a medium travel pack is fine for most riders.
- A small bag between your feet on the floorboard of scooters like the BeAT, Scoopy or Vario — keep it low and secure.
- A small duffel strapped down, for short trips at low speed.
- Under-seat storage — a helmet, raincoat or small day bag.
What doesn’t
Large suitcases. Balancing one on the floorboard or your lap makes the scooter unstable, blocks the handlebars and turns a simple stop into a fall. With a passenger, it’s even worse. Don’t do it.

Smarter options for moving luggage
- Grab or Gojek car — book a car for your bags (and a passenger) while you ride the scooter. Usually cheap for South Bali trips.
- Private transfer — better for longer moves like Canggu to Ubud or Ubud to Amed. See Bali transport options.
- Ask your rental — some can deliver your bike to your next villa, so you travel together with your luggage in a car.
- Leave bags at your hotel — many will store luggage for a few days while you explore with a backpack.
Arriving at the airport
Riding away from Ngurah Rai with a suitcase isn’t practical. Either travel with cabin baggage only, or take a car to your hotel and have the scooter delivered there. See Bali airport scooter rental.
Island hopping
Fast boats to Nusa Penida and the Gilis leave from Sanur and Padang Bai. Drop your scooter before the harbour and walk on with your bags — rental scooters usually can’t go on the boat. See taking a scooter to Nusa Penida or Lombok and one-way scooter rental.
Surfboards and big gear
For surfboards, use a scooter with a proper surf rack — see surf rack scooter rental. For families with lots of gear, a car is simply easier: family car rental in Bali.

Frequently asked questions
Can I carry a suitcase on a scooter in Bali?
It is not safe. A large suitcase makes the scooter unstable. Send big bags by car and ride with a backpack.
What luggage fits on a rental scooter?
A backpack, a small bag on the floorboard and small items under the seat.
How do I move luggage between villas in Bali?
Book a Grab car or private transfer for the bags, or ask your rental to deliver the scooter to your next villa.
Can I take a rental scooter on the boat to Nusa Penida?
Usually not. Drop the scooter before the harbour and rent another on the island.
