Munduk & North Bali by Scooter: Lakes, Waterfalls and the Ride to Lovina

Short answer: Munduk is about 2.5–3 hours from Canggu and 2–2.5 hours from Ubud by scooter, via Bedugul. It’s cool, misty mountain country with crater lakes, coffee and clove farms and some of Bali’s best waterfalls. Stay two nights, then ride an hour down to Lovina on the north coast before heading back south.

If South Bali is beaches and beach clubs, the central highlands are the opposite: pine forests, morning mist, lakes and temperatures that can drop below 18 °C at night. The ride from Bedugul to Munduk along the ridge above the twin lakes is one of the most scenic roads in Bali.

The route

LegDistanceRide time
Canggu → Bedugul~55 km1.5–2 h
Ubud → Bedugul~50 km1.5 h
Bedugul → Munduk (ridge road)~20 km40 min
Munduk → Lovina~35 km1 h
Lovina → Canggu (via Bedugul)~100 km3–3.5 h

From Bedugul, follow the road past Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan towards Munduk. The road climbs to a ridge with famous viewpoints over the twin lakes — stop early in the morning for the clearest views.

What to see

  • Ulun Danu Beratan — Bali’s iconic lake temple, in Bedugul.
  • Twin lakes viewpoint — Buyan and Tamblingan from the ridge road.
  • Handara gate — the photogenic split gate at the golf resort entrance near Bedugul.
  • Banyumala Twin Waterfalls — two falls with a swimming pool, a short walk from parking.
  • Munduk Waterfall (Red Coral) and nearby falls — reached via forest paths; trails can be slippery.
  • Coffee and clove plantations — Munduk smells of cloves drying in the sun.
  • Lovina — calm black-sand beaches, sunrise dolphin boat trips and a relaxed north-coast vibe. See Lovina.

Which scooter to rent

This is a mountain ride with long climbs, so a 150–160 cc scooter is the best choice — Vario 160, NMAX or PCX. Two adults on a Scoopy will crawl up the hills. If you’re carrying luggage between hotels, keep it to a backpack — see luggage on a scooter — or send bags ahead by car.

Cold, rain and fog

  • Bring a real jacket. Bedugul and Munduk are 1,000–1,200 m high; mornings and evenings are chilly, and riding makes it colder.
  • Rain gear: afternoon showers are common, even in the dry season. Pack a poncho.
  • Fog: visibility can drop to a few metres. Turn on your headlight, slow right down and keep left.
  • Wet roads: moss and leaves make corners slippery; brake gently and early.
  • Start early, arrive before dark. See night riding.

A 3-day North Bali loop

  1. Day 1: Canggu or Ubud → Jatiluwih → Bedugul → Munduk (see Jatiluwih by scooter).
  2. Day 2: Munduk waterfalls and the twin lakes, sunset from your guesthouse.
  3. Day 3: down to Lovina for lunch and the beach, then back south via Bedugul — or stay a night in Lovina for the sunrise dolphins.

Prefer not to ride it? The same loop works with a car and driver — see car rental with driver.
