Riding a Scooter at Night in Bali: Risks & Safety Tips

Bali’s nights are part of the fun — sunsets, dinners, beach clubs. Most of those plans end with a ride home in the dark. Here’s how to do it safely, and when to leave the bike where it is.
Why night riding is riskier
- Poor street lighting on many roads outside town centres.
- Potholes and sand are much harder to see.
- Other road users — bikes without lights, drunk riders, trucks.
- Dogs lying on warm roads in villages.
- Fog and sharp bends in the mountains.
Where it’s fine — and where it isn’t
Generally OK with care: busy, lit roads in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, Jimbaran and central Ubud.
Avoid after dark: mountain roads (Kintamani, Bedugul, Munduk), long rural stretches in East and West Bali, unlit rice-field shortcuts, and steep beach roads on the Bukit if you’re not confident.

Before you ride
- Check the headlight (high and low beam), tail light and brake light.
- Use a clear visor or clear glasses — not sunglasses.
- Wear something light-coloured if you can.
- Plan your route on a main road, even if it’s a bit longer.
On the road
- Ride about 20% slower than you would by day.
- Leave more space to the vehicle in front.
- Dip your headlight for oncoming traffic.
- Watch for unlit scooters and parked cars at the roadside.
- Ride steadily past dogs — don’t swerve suddenly.
Alcohol: just don’t
A huge share of tourist scooter crashes happen at night after drinking. Travel insurance almost never pays if you’d been drinking. Leave the bike, take a Grab or Gojek home, and pick it up in the morning — most venues are fine with bikes staying overnight in attended parking. See insurance and scooters.
Arriving at night
After a long flight, don’t ride from the airport in the dark. Take a car to your hotel and have the bike delivered next morning — or see 24-hour scooter rental if you really need it.
Sunset rides
Most night rides start at a sunset spot. Wait 20–30 minutes for traffic to thin out before heading home. Our sunset spots guide covers the best places.
Parking at night
Use attended parking, take the key, lock the steering — and at your villa, park inside the gate. See scooter theft in Bali.
Book a well-maintained bike
Bright, working lights matter at night. Check them at handover — scooters from the SiapPergi catalogue are delivered to your villa and you pay only after checking.
