Jatiluwih Rice Terraces by Scooter: Route, Tickets & a Perfect Day Loop

Short answer: Jatiluwih is about 1.5–2 hours from Canggu and 1.5 hours from Ubud by scooter. Go early (8–10 am) before clouds roll in, pay the entrance ticket in cash at the gate, walk one of the marked trails and combine it with Ulun Danu Beratan temple in Bedugul for a full-day loop.

Tegallalang is the famous rice terrace; Jatiluwih is the spectacular one. Its terraces cover hundreds of hectares on the slopes of Mount Batukaru and are part of Bali’s UNESCO-listed subak irrigation landscape. It feels huge, green and peaceful — and the ride there, through Tabanan’s villages and forests, is half the fun.

Route options

From Canggu, Seminyak or Kerobokan

Ride north via Mengwi and Tabanan, then up through Penebel to Jatiluwih — about 50–55 km. After Tabanan, the roads become quiet and scenic. Leave by 7:30 am to dodge the Kerobokan traffic.

From Ubud

Head west via Sangeh or Mengwi to Tabanan and up to Jatiluwih — around 45–50 km on smaller rural roads. Google Maps can send you along very narrow lanes; stay on the main roads where you can. See navigating Bali by scooter.

Tickets, parking and trails

  • Entrance ticket is paid at the village checkpoint on the road in, cash only. Prices for foreign visitors change from time to time — bring rupiah.
  • Scooter parking is at the main visitor area with warungs and viewpoints; a small parking fee is common.
  • Trails: several marked loops from about 30 minutes to 2–3 hours, following the irrigation channels between the terraces. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.
  • Respect the fields: stay on paths and don’t step on the terrace walls — they’re working farms.

When to go

The terraces change through the year: bright green when the rice is young, golden before harvest, and flooded mirror-like fields after planting. Any time is beautiful. The weather matters more: mornings are clearer; by early afternoon, mist and clouds often build on Batukaru, and in the rainy season heavy showers are likely. Read riding in the rainy season.

The perfect day loop

  1. 7:30 — leave Canggu or Ubud.
  2. 9:00 — Jatiluwih: walk a trail, coffee at a terrace-view warung.
  3. 11:30 — ride up to Bedugul (about 45 minutes) for Ulun Danu Beratan, the lake temple. See Bedugul.
  4. 13:00 — lunch by the lake or at the Candikuning market.
  5. Optional — Banyumala or Munduk waterfalls; see Bali waterfalls by scooter.
  6. Afternoon — ride back south, or end at Tanah Lot for sunset if you’re based in Canggu.

That’s about 130–150 km of riding — a full day. Don’t plan to be back after dark.

Which scooter and what to bring

  • A Vario 160, NMAX or PCX for the long climbs and comfort.
  • A light jacket — Jatiluwih sits around 700 m and Bedugul over 1,200 m; it gets cool.
  • A rain poncho, sunscreen, water and cash.
  • Fuel up in Tabanan; petrol stations are sparse in the hills. See the fuel guide.
