Renting a scooter in Kintamani: what to know

Kintamani is the highland area of Bangli regency that wraps around the Mount Batur caldera. On the caldera rim sits Penelokan, a row of restaurants looking out over the volcano and lake, while down on the caldera floor lie Lake Batur, black lava fields and the villages of Kedisan, Buahan and Toya Bungkah with its hot spring pools. Most visitors come up from Ubud for the sunrise trek or simply lunch with a view. With scooter rental for Kintamani you can stop at every viewpoint, ride down to the lake and head home before the thick fog rolls in.

The most popular route is from Ubud via Tegallalang and Sebatu or via Payangan, about ±1 hour of steady climbing. Past Penelokan, the road down to Kedisan and Toya Bungkah is very steep and winding. Fog can come in at any time, especially from midday, and wet roads dusted with volcanic sand get slippery. That is why we recommend a 150cc+ bike such as the Yamaha NMAX, PCX or Vario 160, especially with a passenger; experienced riders who want to explore the lava tracks can choose a Kawasaki KLX.

Prices start from about IDR 80,000 per day, with higher rates for 150cc+ bikes. There are few rental shops in Kintamani itself, so most people rent in Ubud or South Bali and ride up. There is usually a tourist levy checkpoint on the approach to Penelokan, so carry some cash. Petrol stations exist around Kintamani and Penelokan, but fill up before descending to the lake.

Approximate riding times: Ubud to Penelokan ±1 hour, Penelokan to Toya Bungkah ±20–30 minutes, Penelokan to Ulun Danu Batur Temple ±10 minutes, and the airport to Kintamani ±2–2.5 hours. The Mount Batur sunrise trek starts around Toya Bungkah and Pura Jati, and a local guide is generally required. Riding mountain roads in the dark needs full concentration, so consider staying near the lake the night before.

Temperatures in Kintamani are far lower than on the coast, especially before sunrise, so pack a jacket, gloves and a raincoat. In the rainy season (roughly November to March) fog and rain can cut visibility to a few metres; keep your headlight on and slow right down. Compare bikes in our best scooter to rent in Bali guide before you book.

Whichever scooter rental you use for Kintamani, foreign riders need a home licence plus an International Driving Permit covering motorcycles. If you are not used to long climbs and descents, a car with driver from Ubud is the safer alternative, especially for the pre-dawn run.
