What to Wear Riding a Scooter in Bali (Heat, Rain & Road Rash)

Bali is hot, humid and occasionally torrential. It’s tempting to ride in a singlet, shorts and flip-flops — and that’s exactly what most riders with road rash were wearing. Here’s how to dress for the heat without leaving your skin on the asphalt.
The non-negotiables
A helmet that fits
Strapped on, every ride. A visor or sunglasses protect your eyes from dust, insects and sudden rain. Check the rental helmet fits before you pay — see Bali helmet rules.
Closed shoes
Flip-flops slip off, offer zero protection and make it hard to put a foot down quickly. Light sneakers or trail sandals with a heel strap are far better. Your toes will thank you after the first sudden stop on gravel.
Clothing for the heat
- A light long-sleeve shirt — linen or a technical sun shirt. It keeps you cooler than bare skin in direct sun and gives some protection in a slide.
- Long, light trousers — linen pants, thin chinos or lightweight jeans. Shorts are common, but a minor slip at 30 km/h in shorts is painful.
- For long or fast rides (Uluwatu, Kintamani, Amed), a light textile riding jacket and gloves are worth it.

Sun protection
You’ll burn faster on a scooter than you expect — the breeze hides the heat. Sunscreen on the back of your neck, hands, forearms and the tops of your feet; lip balm with SPF; and a buff around your neck for dusty roads.
Rain gear
From roughly November to March, afternoon storms arrive with little warning. Most rentals keep a raincoat under the seat — check it’s there. A poncho over a backpack works too. If the rain is heavy, pull over at a warung and wait it out: see riding in the rainy season.
Mountain rides get cold
Kintamani, Bedugul and Munduk can be 15–18°C in the early morning. If you’re riding up for sunrise, bring a fleece or windproof jacket — riding at speed makes it feel much colder. Planning a sunrise ride? Read Mount Batur by scooter.
What not to wear
- Swimwear or no shirt on main roads. It’s considered disrespectful in Bali and police in tourist areas have stopped riders for it.
- Long loose skirts or sarongs that can catch in the wheel.
- Headphones — you need to hear horns.
Temple stops
If you’re visiting temples along the way, carry a sarong and sash, or a long skirt and a top that covers your shoulders. Many temples lend or rent sarongs at the entrance.
Short packing list for riders
- Light sneakers or strapped sandals
- Linen trousers + light long-sleeve shirt
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, SPF lip balm, buff
- Light rain poncho (if your rental doesn’t supply one)
- Fleece for mountain mornings
- Phone mount and a small cross-body bag
- Licence, International Driving Permit and a passport photo on your phone
