Canggu to Uluwatu by Scooter: Route, Time & Tips for the Bukit

Canggu and Uluwatu are Bali’s two surf capitals, about an hour or more apart by scooter. Many travellers do the trip for the beaches, the cliff-top sunset or a surf session on the Bukit. Here’s how to make the ride smooth.
Riding time and distance
Expect around 1 to 1.5 hours, longer at peak times. The route runs through some of the busiest roads in Bali, so timing matters more than distance.
The route
From Canggu, the usual route goes through Kerobokan or Seminyak to the Sunset Road or Ngurah Rai Bypass, past the airport area, then south through Jimbaran and up onto the Bukit Peninsula towards Pecatu and Uluwatu. The bypass is wide but very busy with trucks and cars — keep left, check mirrors and avoid weaving.

Times to avoid
- Weekday mornings around 7–9 am and evenings around 4–7 pm.
- Sunset traffic heading to Uluwatu temple and the beach clubs.
- Holiday periods — see peak season.
Which scooter?
The Bukit is hilly, with steep roads down to beaches like Nyang Nyang, Bingin and Melasti. Solo, any scooter works. For two people or surfboards, choose an NMAX or PCX. Carrying a board? See surf rack scooter rental.
Beach stops worth the detour
- Jimbaran Bay — seafood at sunset on the way back.
- Melasti — dramatic cliff road down to the sand.
- Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban — the classic Uluwatu beaches.

Riding back after sunset
If you stay for the Uluwatu temple sunset, you’ll ride back in the dark with lots of other traffic. Ride slowly, use your headlights, and watch for potholes on the Bukit roads. If you’ve had a drink, leave the bike and take a Grab. See riding a scooter at night in Bali.
Fuel and parking
Fill up before heading onto the Bukit — there are stations, but fewer than in Canggu. Beach and temple parking usually costs IDR 2–5k per scooter. See scooter parking.
