Cancelling a Scooter or Car Rental in Bali: Refunds, Deposits & Early Returns

Short answer: if you booked without paying anything upfront — which is how many Bali rentals work — cancelling simply means sending a polite WhatsApp message. If you paid a booking fee or prepaid online, the refund depends on that rental’s policy, so get it in writing before you pay. Early returns on weekly or monthly rates often get recalculated at the daily price, so the refund can be smaller than you expect.

Plans change: flights get delayed, it rains for three days, someone gets Bali belly, or you fall in love with Ubud and don’t want to go back to Canggu. Here’s how cancellations, changes and early returns usually work — and how to make sure you don’t lose money.
The three common booking types
1. Pay on delivery (no prepayment)
You reserve on WhatsApp, the vehicle arrives, you check it and pay. Cancelling costs nothing, but rentals appreciate notice — at least a few hours before delivery, ideally a day. Last-minute no-shows are why some rentals ask for a deposit in peak season. More in scooter rental with pay on delivery and car rental with pay on delivery.
2. Small booking fee or deposit
Common for cars, big bikes and high season. Typical rules: free cancellation up to 24–72 hours before pickup, after that the fee is kept. Ask whether the fee is deducted from the rental price (it should be).
3. Fully prepaid online
Via a platform or the rental’s own site. The platform’s cancellation policy applies — read it before paying, and pay by card or PayPal where possible so you have a dispute option.
Flight delayed or cancelled
Message the rental as soon as you know, with your new arrival time. Most will simply move the delivery. If you prepaid and lose a day, many rentals will shift the rental period rather than charge you for the missing day — but only if you tell them before the original delivery time. A driver who has already waited two hours at arrivals is a different conversation.

Returning early
This is where most misunderstandings happen. If you took a weekly rate of, say, IDR 450,000 (about IDR 64,000 a day) and return after four days, the rental may recalculate at the normal daily rate of IDR 80,000 — four days × 80,000 = 320,000 — and refund only the difference of 130,000. That’s fair by local standards, because the discount was for the full week. Ask about this before you commit to weekly or monthly. See daily vs weekly vs monthly rental.
Extending instead
Extending is usually easy — just message before your return date. If you keep the vehicle without telling anyone, expect to pay late fees, and in the worst case the rental may report the vehicle as missing. See returning a rental scooter.
Rain, ceremonies and illness
- Heavy rain: not normally a reason for a refund on a running rental, but many rentals will pause or swap a scooter for a car if you ask nicely. Read riding in the rainy season.
- Nyepi (Day of Silence): nobody can drive for 24 hours. Most rentals don’t charge that day on long rentals — ask.
- Injury or illness: return the vehicle early and ask for a pro-rata refund; show goodwill and most rentals will meet you halfway.
How to protect your money
- Prefer pay-on-delivery rentals or small booking fees over large prepayments.
- Get price, dates, deposit and cancellation rules in one WhatsApp message — screenshot it.
- Never leave your passport as a deposit. See scooter rental deposits.
- Pay by card or a traceable transfer for anything prepaid, and keep receipts.
- Read the agreement — see rental agreement checklist and renter rights.
- Watch for common tricks in Bali rental scams.

Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a Bali scooter rental for free?
If you have not paid anything upfront, yes — just message the rental with as much notice as possible. Prepaid bookings follow the rental’s or platform’s cancellation policy.
Do I get a refund if I return my rental early in Bali?
Usually yes for unused days, but weekly or monthly discounts may be recalculated at the daily rate, so the refund can be smaller. Ask before booking.
What if my flight to Bali is delayed?
Tell the rental immediately with your new arrival time. Most will move the delivery and shift the rental period without charge.
Should I pay a deposit to reserve a scooter in Bali?
Only a small one, only with a reputable rental, and only with the cancellation rules in writing. Never leave your passport as a deposit.
