Your Rights When Renting a Scooter in Bali

As a customer you are protected by Indonesia’s Consumer Protection Law (No. 8 of 1999): the right to accurate information, to safety, and to be heard. In practice:
- Clear pricing: know the total — rental, delivery, deposit, late fees — before paying, in writing.
- A safe bike: you may refuse a bike with weak brakes or bald tyres and ask for another (checklist).
- The STNK registration paper must come with the bike.
- Your passport stays with you; offer a recorded cash deposit instead (deposits).
- Receipts and explained deductions: damage claims should be shown, compared with your handover photos and backed by a workshop quote.
You also have duties: reasonable use, on-time return, reporting problems and paying for damage you cause. If things go wrong, talk to the owner with evidence, involve your accommodation, leave a factual review, and for serious losses contact consumer protection or the police. See common scams.
