Returning a Rental Scooter in Bali: Checklist for a Smooth Handback

A good rental experience ends with a quick, friendly handback. A bad one ends with an argument about a scratch or the fuel level. A few minutes of preparation makes all the difference.

The day before

  • Confirm the return time and place on WhatsApp — your villa, the airport or a harbour.
  • Want more days? Ask now. Extending is usually easy, but not in peak season if the bike is booked.
  • Flying out? Arrange collection from your last hotel rather than riding to the airport with luggage.

Return checklist

  1. Fuel: refill to the level you received it at (check your handover photo). See fuel guide.
  2. Clean-up: if the bike is caked in mud or sand, a quick wash at a roadside cuci motor costs little and avoids cleaning fees.
  3. Return video: film the bike again from the same angles as at handover, plus the dashboard.
  4. Everything back: key (or smart key), STNK, two helmets, raincoat, phone holder, any lock.
  5. On time: late returns may be charged as an extra day.
  6. Deposit: if you paid one, get it back on the spot or agree the transfer time in writing.

If there’s new damage

Be upfront — it’s far easier than having it found later. Compare with your handover video, ask for a workshop quote, and agree a fair price. See scratch and damage costs.

If the rental claims damage you didn’t cause

Show your handover video and photos calmly. Most disputes end there. If not, see your rights as a renter.

Returning in a different area

Ending your trip in Ubud, Amed or at the harbour? Arrange a one-way return in advance — see one-way scooter rental.

Leave a review

If the rental was good, a Google review helps them — and helps the next traveller find a trustworthy rental. If it wasn’t, a fair, factual review warns others.
