Bali Scooter Rental Scams and How to Avoid Them

Most Bali rentals are honest, but a few take advantage of rushed travellers. Know the tricks:
The scams
- Fake accounts asking for a booking deposit, then vanishing. Book with rentals that have real Google reviews or a proper website, ask for a fresh video of the bike, and pay on delivery.
- Old scratches blamed on you. Film the bike and send photos to the rental at handover (checklist).
- Deposit “transferred later”. Get it back when the bike is inspected (deposit guide).
- Passport held as leverage. Never hand over your original passport.
- Bike “stolen” with a spare key. Use attended parking, keep the ticket, lock the steering and report to police (parking tips).
- Price creep on arrival. Get a written all-in price first.
