Bali Scooter Rental Agreement: 8 Things to Get in Writing

Most Bali scooter rentals don’t hand you a long legal contract. Often the “agreement” is a short form or simply your WhatsApp chat. That’s fine — as long as the important things are written down before you pay. Here are the eight we always check.
1. Total price and dates
The daily (or weekly/monthly) rate, the number of days, any delivery or pick-up fee, and the total. “IDR 90k per day” isn’t enough — get “10 days, IDR 900k total, delivery included”.
2. Deposit (if any)
How much, in what form (cash or transfer), and exactly when and how it comes back. Many rentals now take no deposit; some ask for a small one. See deposits and passports and renting without a deposit.

3. Passport
A photo of your passport is normal. Handing over the original is not — and you need it for hotels, checkpoints and flights. Write down that the rental only keeps a photo.
4. Damage
Who pays for what, and how it’s priced. Ask whether they have a price list for common parts (mirrors, panels, levers) or use a workshop quote. Typical costs are in scratch and damage costs.
5. Breakdowns and replacement
If the bike breaks down through normal wear, who pays and how quickly can they bring a replacement? Good rentals reimburse workshop receipts. See breakdowns and flat tyres.
6. Theft
What you owe if the bike is stolen — a fixed amount, market value, or covered by their damage waiver — and what conditions apply (returning the key and STNK). See scooter theft in Bali.
7. Fuel and condition at return
Usually “return with the same fuel level”. Note the fuel level and odometer in a photo at handover.
8. Return time, place and late fees
Exact date and time, where the bike will be collected, and what happens if you’re late or want to extend. See returning a rental scooter.
Your WhatsApp chat is your contract
If there’s no paper form, send a summary message: “Confirming: Scoopy, 10–20 March, IDR 900k total including delivery to Villa X in Canggu, no deposit, passport photo only, return at 10 am on the 20th.” Ask them to reply “OK”. That’s far better than nothing if a dispute comes up.
Plus: the handover video
Film a slow 360° walk-around of the bike showing existing scratches, plus the dashboard (fuel and odometer). Send it to the rental. Full checks in our inspection checklist, and know your rights as a renter.
Rent with terms in writing
The SiapPergi scooter catalogue confirms price, dates and terms on WhatsApp before delivery — and you pay only after checking the bike.

Frequently asked questions
What should a Bali scooter rental agreement include?
Total price and dates, deposit and refund, passport terms, damage rules, breakdown and replacement, theft terms, fuel policy, and return time and place.
Is a WhatsApp chat a valid rental agreement in Bali?
It is good evidence. Send a clear summary of the terms and ask the rental to confirm it before you pay.
Should I sign a rental agreement that keeps my passport?
No. A photo of your passport is normal; leaving the original is not.
How do I protect myself from false damage claims?
Film a 360° video of the bike at handover, photograph the fuel and odometer, and send them to the rental.
