Minimum Age to Rent a Scooter in Bali: Teens, Families & Older Riders

Families ask us this all the time: can my 16-year-old ride their own scooter in Bali? Do rentals have an upper age limit? Here are the rules, what rentals actually ask for, and our honest advice for each age group.
The legal minimum: licence age
In Indonesia, the minimum age for a motorcycle licence (SIM C) is 17. For tourists, the question is whether you hold a valid motorcycle licence from home plus an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category. If you’re not old enough to hold a motorcycle licence at home, you aren’t licensed to ride in Bali either. See Bali scooter licence requirements.
What rentals ask for
- Most rentals: 18 or older for the person signing the agreement.
- Big bikes and premium scooters (XMAX, KLX, big motorcycles): some ask for 21+ and more riding experience. See big bike rental Bali.
- No upper age limit at most rentals — they care more about whether you can handle the bike.
A rental that hands a scooter to an obviously under-age teen with no questions is a rental that cuts corners elsewhere too.

Teenagers (16–17)
Even if a 17-year-old holds a motorcycle licence at home, Bali’s traffic is a big step up from quiet suburban streets. Our advice: let them ride as a passenger with a parent first, then practise in quiet areas like Sanur’s backstreets or rural roads around Tabanan. And check your travel insurance — some policies have age conditions for riders.
Children as passengers
You’ll see local families with three kids on one scooter. That doesn’t make it a good idea for tourists in unfamiliar traffic. If you do carry a child, they need a properly fitting child helmet, they must be able to reach the footrests and hold on, and you should keep rides short and slow. Read riding a scooter with kids in Bali first. For family day trips, a car is safer and more comfortable — see family car rental in Bali.
Riders over 60
Plenty of experienced older riders enjoy Bali on two wheels. A few tips:
- Choose a light, low scooter like a Scoopy or Fazzio — easier to hold up at a standstill and to push when parking.
- Ride in the morning, when traffic is lighter and the heat is easier.
- Pick quieter bases such as Sanur, Ubud’s outskirts or Amed rather than central Canggu.
- Check your insurance for age-related conditions.
What to bring at any age
- Home licence covering motorcycles + IDP (motorcycle category).
- Passport (a photo is enough for the rental).
- Travel insurance that covers motorbike riding.
