Do You Need a License to Rent a Scooter in Bali? (IDP Rules 2026)
Before renting a scooter in Bali, make sure your documents are in order. Bali police regularly run checkpoints, especially in Canggu, Kuta and on the Uluwatu road.
What foreigners need
- International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle category (A), carried together with your home licence.
- Passport — rentals usually just take a photo; avoid leaving your original passport as a deposit.
- The bike’s registration paper (STNK), provided by the rental — keep it under the seat.
Insurance warning
Most travel insurance policies do not cover scooter accidents if you ride without a valid motorcycle licence. Check your policy before you ride.
Rules of the road
- Helmets are mandatory for rider and passenger.
- Maximum 2 people per scooter.
- Headlight on day and night.
- Indonesia drives on the left.
- Bali’s provincial government has repeatedly discussed limiting scooter rentals for tourists; rules can change, so always check the latest with your rental.
