Scooter Breakdown or Flat Tyre in Bali: What to Do (and Who Pays)

Sooner or later, many riders in Bali get a flat tyre or a scooter that refuses to start — usually at the far end of a dusty road, in the midday heat. The good news: Bali is full of small roadside workshops and most problems are fixed in 20 minutes for a few dollars. Here’s exactly what to do.
First: get safe
- Indicate, slow down and pull fully off the road.
- Turn on the hazard lights if your scooter has them.
- Push the bike into shade if you can — you may be there a while.
Step 2: message your rental
Send your rental a WhatsApp message with a photo of the problem and your Google Maps location pin. A good rental will tell you whether to find a workshop, wait for a mechanic, or wait for a replacement bike. This is why we recommend saving their number before you ride — and why rentals that answer quickly are worth a few thousand rupiah more. See how to spot a good rental.

Flat tyre
Most rental scooters have tubeless tyres (newer models) or inner tubes (older or smaller models). Either way, roadside workshops — look for signs saying bengkel or tambal ban (tyre repair) — can fix it quickly.
- Patch or plug: roughly IDR 15–30k.
- New inner tube: roughly IDR 40–70k.
- New tyre: more, depending on size — ask your rental before agreeing.
Don’t ride far on a flat — you can damage the tyre and the rim, which costs much more.
Scooter won’t start
Before you panic, check the usual suspects:
- Side stand down? Most scooters won’t start with the side stand down.
- Brake lever pulled? You must hold a brake while pressing the starter.
- Smart key (NMAX, PCX, Vario 160): is the key fob in your pocket, and is the knob turned to ON?
- Idling stop: if the engine stopped at a light and the light is flashing, just twist the throttle.
- Fuel: check the gauge — it’s more common than you’d think.
- Kick-start: many scooters still have one. Put the bike on the centre stand and kick firmly.

Out of fuel
Look for a Pertamina station or the small roadside stalls selling fuel in bottles or from a mini pump. Bottle fuel costs a little more but gets you to the next station. Our fuel guide covers prices and grades.
Who pays for repairs?
- Wear and tear — flat tyres from normal riding, a dead battery, a broken cable — is usually the rental’s responsibility. Pay the workshop, keep the receipt and send a photo to the rental; good rentals reimburse you or deduct it from your rental.
- Damage from a fall or misuse is usually on you. See accident and damage.
- Agree it upfront. Ask before you pay: “If the bike breaks down, do you send a replacement?”
Getting a replacement bike
In South Bali and Ubud, many rentals can bring a replacement within an hour or two. In remote areas — Amed, Munduk, the west coast — it can take much longer, so a workshop fix is usually faster. For long road trips, ask your rental about their coverage area before you set off.
Prevention: the 5-minute check
Most breakdowns start with a tired bike. Check tyres, brakes, lights and the fuel level when the scooter is delivered, and film it. Our inspection checklist lists every check. Scooters in the SiapPergi catalogue are delivered to your villa and you pay only once you’re happy with them.
