Best Scooter to Rent in Bali 2026: Scoopy vs Vario vs NMAX
“Which scooter should I rent in Bali?” is the question we hear most. The answer depends on your experience, whether you ride two-up and where you are going. A Scoopy that is perfect for zipping around Canggu struggles with two adults on the climb to Kintamani, while an NMAX that is lovely for touring is clumsy in Ubud's narrow lanes. This guide compares the most popular rental scooters in 2026, Scoopy vs Vario vs NMAX plus the Fazzio, PCX, XMAX and KLX, and recommends the best scooter for each rider, area and route.

Scoopy vs Vario vs NMAX
Honda Scoopy: light and easy
Bali's most rented scooter. Light, low seat, very frugal and photogenic. The 110cc engine feels weak two-up on long climbs, and under-seat storage only fits a raincoat and small items. Choose it if you are a beginner, riding solo and staying mostly in flat South Bali.
Honda Vario: the safe all-rounder
The Vario 125 or 160 is the sweet spot: more power and storage than a Scoopy for only a little more money, and comfortable for two on the way to Ubud, Bedugul or the Bukit beaches. If in doubt, rent a Vario.
Yamaha NMAX: comfort for distance
A maxi scooter with a wide seat, stretched-out riding position, better suspension and bigger wheels. Excellent for couples and long rides to Amed, Lovina or Kintamani, but heavier and wider, so less fun in tight lanes and crowded parking. Ideal for experienced riders planning a Bali scooter road trip.
Best scooter by rider type
- Beginners: Scoopy. Practise in a quiet lane first.
- Couples: Vario in the south, NMAX or PCX if you head to the mountains.
- Digital nomads on monthly rentals: Fazzio or Scoopy in busy Canggu, Vario in Ubud. See monthly scooter rental.
- Surfers: Scoopy or Vario with a side surf rack.
- Tourers: NMAX, PCX or, for experienced big-scooter riders, XMAX.
- Off-roaders: KLX, only if you are comfortable with a manual clutch.
- Tight budgets: Scoopy or Beat. See cheap scooter rental.
Best scooter by area
Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta: flat but congested with narrow lanes, so a nimble Scoopy or Fazzio wins. See Canggu scooter rental. Ubud: constant ups and downs between rice fields; a Vario is ideal. See Ubud scooter rental. Uluwatu and the Bukit cliffs: steep descents to Bingin, Padang Padang, Nyang Nyang and Melasti mean brakes matter more than power. A Vario or NMAX with good brakes feels safer with a passenger; watch for sand on corners near the beaches. Sanur and Nusa Dua: wide, tidy roads where any scooter works.
Best scooter by route
Kintamani and Mount Batur
From Ubud it is roughly an hour of continuous climbing, and it gets cold at the top. Two-up, take at least a Vario 160, ideally an NMAX or PCX. A solo rider can make it on a Scoopy, but it will labour. On the way down, alternate front and rear brakes so they do not overheat.
Bedugul, Munduk and Lovina
Twisty climbs with frequent afternoon fog and rain. An NMAX or Vario with good tyres, plus a raincoat.
Amed and East Bali
Two and a half to three hours from the south, so seat comfort matters: NMAX or PCX.
Nusa Penida
Roads to Kelingking, Broken Beach and Diamond Beach have improved in places, but there are still narrow, steep, potholed or rocky sections. Experienced riders usually pick a Vario or, if skilled, a KLX. Beginners should consider a local driver. See Nusa Penida scooter rental.
Riding two-up
A passenger lengthens braking distances, makes corners heavier and saps power on climbs. For two adults, 125cc and up is far more comfortable, and the NMAX and PCX have longer seats and better passenger footrests. Both riders must wear a helmet; the fine is up to Rp 250,000. Maximum two people per bike.
Luggage
A Scoopy or Fazzio fits a raincoat, water bottle and wallet. A Vario usually fits a half-face helmet. An NMAX or PCX has a big under-seat box and a flat floorboard for a backpack. A scooter is not the way to carry a large suitcase from the airport; take a taxi to your hotel and have the bike delivered there, or use car rental on arrival day. Some rentals offer a top box for a small fee.
Surf racks
Side racks are most common on the Scoopy, Vario and Fazzio thanks to their slim bodies, and fit shortboards up to about seven feet. Longboards need a special rack and catch the wind. A board on the side makes the bike wider, so take care filtering through traffic.
Licences and rules for every bike
Whatever you ride, foreigners need a home motorcycle licence plus an IDP with category A. In 2023 the Bali governor announced an intention to stop foreign tourists renting motorbikes; as of 2026 there is no island-wide ban in force, but rules can change, so rent from a registered business and check the latest news. See our licence guide and safety tips.
Quick verdict
- Cheapest and easiest: Scoopy.
