How to Pay for a Scooter Rental in Bali: Cash, Card, QRIS or Transfer?

You’ve found a bike, agreed a price, and now the rental asks: “Cash or transfer?” If you’re not from Indonesia, that question raises a few more. Can I use my card? What’s QRIS? Should I send a deposit before the bike turns up? Here’s how paying for a scooter in Bali actually works.

Pay on delivery if you can

The safest way is simple: pay when the bike turns up, after you’ve checked it over and seen the STNK (registration) under the seat. In peak season some rentals want a small booking deposit to hold a bike — fair enough, but keep it small, send it to an account in the same name as their Google Maps listing, and keep the receipt in the chat. A full upfront payment to an Instagram account you can’t verify is how most scooter scams work (more on that here).

Deposits: cash is easiest

For an automatic, expect a deposit of about IDR 500k–1M, more for an NMAX or PCX or a monthly rental. A cash deposit is the easiest to get back — it’s handed over when the bike is collected. If you pay it by transfer, agree in the chat when and to which account it comes back. Details in how scooter deposits work in Bali.

What on earth is QRIS?

QRIS is Indonesia’s national payment QR code — you’ll see the red-and-white sticker on everything from warungs to beach clubs. Locals scan it with their bank app. Through Bank Indonesia’s cross-border links, some visitors can pay QRIS straight from their home payment apps — this works for a handful of Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan. Coming from Australia, the UK, Europe or the US? Cash is still the easiest way to pay a scooter rental.

Getting cash without getting stung

  • Use ATMs inside banks, malls or minimarkets (Indomaret, Alfamart) rather than standalone street machines. Many cap each withdrawal at around IDR 2.5–3M.
  • Always choose to be charged in rupiah if the ATM or card machine offers a conversion — the “in your home currency” option usually has a worse rate.
  • Change money at an authorised money changer with the Bank Indonesia logo. If a rate looks too good to be true at a tiny kiosk in Kuta, it is.
  • A travel card (Wise, Revolut and the like) keeps fees low on ATM withdrawals.
  • Keep small notes for parking (IDR 2–5k) and roadside fuel.

Don’t mix it up with the tourist levy

Bali charges foreign visitors a one-off tourism levy of IDR 150,000, paid through the official Love Bali system — it has nothing to do with your scooter rental. Nobody at a rental should be collecting it.

Costs people forget

  • Delivery outside the rental’s area.
  • A second helmet, raincoat or phone holder (often free — just ask).
  • Late fees, by the hour or the day.
  • Card surcharges.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay a deposit before the scooter is delivered?

Only a small booking deposit, and only to an account whose name matches the rental’s Google Maps listing. Pay the rest when the bike arrives and you’ve checked it.

How much is a scooter deposit in Bali?

Usually around IDR 500k–1M for an automatic, more for an NMAX, PCX or monthly rental. It’s returned when the bike comes back in good condition.

Can tourists use QRIS in Bali?

Visitors from some Asian countries, such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan, can pay QRIS with their home apps. Most other tourists find cash easier.

Is the Bali tourist levy paid to the scooter rental?
