Renting a Scooter in Bali as a Beginner: Bike Choice & Safe Practice

Every day someone rides a scooter for the first time in Bali. Preparation, not bravery, decides how it goes.
Are you ready?
You should be able to balance at walking pace, brake hard without panicking, make tight turns and pull away on a hill. If not, use Grab/Gojek or a car with driver while you practise. You also need a licence plus an IDP covering motorcycles — riding without one can void travel insurance (licence rules).
Best bikes for beginners
The Honda Scoopy, Yamaha Fazzio or Honda BeAT: light, low seats, gentle throttle. Avoid NMAX, PCX, XMAX and manual bikes in your first week.
Where to practise
Sanur, the Nusa Dua resort area and village roads around Ubud early in the morning. Avoid the Canggu–Berawa road, Sunset Road and Kuta at rush hour.
Local habits
Ride on the left, a short beep means “I’m here”, bikes overtake on both sides, sand and offerings make corners slippery, and ceremonies can close roads. See safety tips.
A three-day plan
Day 1: practise and a short ride. Day 2: 20–30 minute trips outside rush hour. Day 3: a half-day loop planned with realistic travel times. No two-up mountain rides on day one.
