Scooter Rental vs Grab/Gojek in Bali 2026: Which Is Cheaper?

Updated

It is one of the classic Bali holiday dilemmas: should you rent your own scooter or just use Grab and Gojek? A scooter gives you total freedom and looks cheap. Ride-hailing needs no licence, no parking and carries no risk of damaging a bike. The right answer depends on your travel style, how many trips you make a day, where you are staying and how confident you are on two wheels.

This guide compares the two honestly: approximate costs per day and per week for typical itineraries, convenience, safety, the areas where app pick-ups are restricted, and when each option makes sense. All numbers are general 2026 ranges, not official fares, because app prices change with distance, time and demand.

What a scooter rental costs

Scooter prices in Bali are fairly stable. As a guide, a Honda Scoopy costs about Rp 70,000–100,000 per day, a Vario or Fazzio Rp 80,000–120,000 and an NMAX Rp 120,000–180,000. Weekly rentals are usually 15–25% cheaper per day. See our full Bali scooter rental prices guide.

On top of rent, add fuel (Pertalite is Rp 10,000 per litre and an automatic scooter does 40–50 km per litre, so 40 km a day is roughly Rp 10,000), parking at Rp 2,000–5,000 per stop in tourist areas, and a refundable deposit. Realistically, a Scoopy costs Rp 85,000–120,000 a day all in, however many trips you make.

What Grab and Gojek cost

Ride-hailing is priced per trip. A short bike ride within one area, such as villa to beach in Canggu, is often only in the low tens of thousands of rupiah. A medium hop like Seminyak to Canggu costs a few tens of thousands. Long trips like Canggu to Uluwatu or Kuta to Ubud can reach hundreds of thousands one way, and car rides cost more. Prices surge at peak times, late at night and in the rain.

Cost by itinerary

Over a week the gap widens. An active traveller crossing areas daily can spend well over Rp 1 million a week on apps, while a weekly Scoopy plus fuel is typically Rp 500,000–700,000. If you mostly relax at a Nusa Dua resort and go out occasionally, though, apps or taxis are clearly cheaper than paying for a bike that sits in the car park.

Where ride-hailing is restricted

This surprises many visitors. In several parts of Bali, Grab and Gojek pick-ups are restricted or not allowed because of agreements with local transport cooperatives or driver groups. Areas often mentioned include parts of Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, as well as airport pick-up zones. Boundaries are not always clear and can change. In practice, bookings may go unaccepted, drivers may ask you to walk somewhere else, or signs may direct you to local transport at higher fares. Drop-offs are usually fine; getting back is the hard part. Respect local rules and never pressure a driver to pick you up in a restricted zone. If you are staying in one of these areas, a scooter is often the most practical answer; see Ubud scooter rental or Uluwatu scooter rental.

Convenience

Scooter pros

  • Stop anywhere: roadside warungs, rice fields, hidden beaches.
  • No waiting for drivers or walking to pick-up points.
  • Perfect for surfers hopping between breaks with a surf rack.
  • Opens up longer trips such as our Bali scooter road trip itinerary.

Grab and Gojek pros

  • No licence, parking or fuel to think about.
  • No damage risk and no deposit disputes.
  • The right choice after drinks: never ride after drinking.
  • Local drivers know the shortcuts, and food delivery is in the same app.

Safety comes first

Bali traffic is dense, roads are narrow and skill levels vary. If you have never ridden a motorbike, a Bali holiday is not the place to learn; use apps or a car with driver instead. Experienced riders can ride safely with a proper helmet, moderate speed, no unfamiliar roads at night and no riding when tired or after alcohol. Read our Bali scooter safety tips. Legally, you need a valid licence: foreigners need a home motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit, and police checkpoints are common in tourist areas (see Bali police checkpoints and fines). On an app ride, that is the driver’s responsibility.

When a scooter makes sense

  • You are staying more than 3–4 days and making several trips a day.
  • Your accommodation is in an area that restricts app pick-ups.
  • You want to explore beyond town: Tegallalang, Jatiluwih, the Bukit beaches or East Bali.
  • You are an experienced rider with the right licence.
  • You are staying long term; see monthly scooter rental.

When Grab or Gojek makes sense

  • You have no licence or do not feel confident riding.
  • Short stay, few trips, mostly at a resort.
  • You plan to drink in the evening.
  • It is pouring and you would rather take a car.
  • You only need one long transfer, such as airport to hotel.

The smart combination

Do not forget the hidden extras on both sides. With a scooter, budget for the occasional tyre repair (around Rp 15,000–25,000), pricier parking at popular attractions and possible small damage charges. With apps, factor in surge pricing, service fees, tips and time spent waiting. Also remember that an app bike carries one passenger: a couple pays twice, while one rented scooter carries two.

Many seasoned travellers use both: a scooter for daytime exploring, and an app or taxi for dinner and late nights. Families and groups might add a rental car for long sightseeing days. Choose a rental that delivers to your accommodation and includes two helmets so you can ride from day one.

Where are Grab and Gojek restricted in Bali?
