Bali Car Rental with a Child Car Seat: Booster, Baby Seat & Family Tips

Short answer: yes, you can get a child car seat in Bali — but only if you ask when you book. Most rental cars and private drivers don’t carry one by default. Expect around IDR 25,000–75,000 per day (sometimes free on weekly rentals), and check the seat carefully before you drive off.

In Bali it’s common to see children on a parent’s lap in the front seat, or three kids sharing one seat belt. That’s local habit, not a safety standard. If you’re used to strapping your kids in at home, there’s no reason to stop on holiday — and the roads here, with sudden braking, scooters cutting in and steep hills, are exactly where a proper seat matters.
Which seat for which age
| Age (approx.) | Weight | Seat type |
|---|---|---|
| 0–12 months | up to 13 kg | Rear-facing infant seat (capsule) |
| 1–4 years | 9–18 kg | Forward-facing seat with harness, or extended rear-facing |
| 4–7 years | 15–25 kg | High-back booster with the car’s seat belt |
| 7–12 years | 22–36 kg | Booster cushion until the adult belt fits properly |
Tell the rental the age and weight of each child, not just “a child seat”. A booster cushion is useless for a 10-month-old, and that’s exactly what you might get if you don’t specify.
Self-drive or with a driver?
Self-drive rental
You’ll fit the seat yourself, so you control how well it’s installed. MPVs like the Avanza, Xpander and Innova are the usual family cars, with room for a seat in the second row plus luggage. Newer Xpanders and Innova Zenix models have ISOFIX points; older Avanzas usually rely on the seat belt. Read family car rental in Bali and self-drive car rental.
Car with driver
Ideal if you don’t want to deal with Bali traffic while a toddler screams in the back. Request the seat in writing when booking the driver, and ask the driver to install it before pickup so you’re not fiddling with straps outside arrivals. See car rental with driver.

Installation checks before you drive off
- Look at the seat itself: no cracks in the plastic, the harness buckle clicks shut and the straps aren’t frayed.
- Check the label: an ECE R44/R129 or similar label means it was made to a recognised standard.
- Install it in the back seat, never in front of an airbag if it’s rear-facing.
- Belt-installed seats: thread the belt through the correct path and pull it tight — the seat should move less than 2–3 cm side to side at the belt path.
- ISOFIX: both connectors should show green and the support leg should touch the floor.
- Harness height: straps at or just below the shoulders for rear-facing, at or just above for forward-facing; you shouldn’t be able to pinch any slack.
Should you bring your own seat?
For a long trip with a baby, bringing your own seat is often the best option. Most airlines carry a car seat free of charge, it fits your child, and you know its history. Lightweight travel seats and inflatable boosters are made exactly for this. For a short stay with older kids, renting a booster in Bali is usually enough.
Other family tips
- Airport pickup: after a long flight, a pre-booked car with the seat already installed is far less stressful than a taxi queue. See Bali airport car rental.
- Keep drives short: Bali distances look small, but traffic turns 30 km into 90 minutes. Plan around naps — see Bali traffic guide.
- Sunshades and water: the back windows get hot; a clip-on shade and a cool box help.
- No kids on scooters without thought: if you plan to ride with children too, read riding a scooter with kids in Bali first.

Frequently asked questions
Do Bali car rentals provide child seats?
Many do, but usually only on request and in limited numbers. Ask when you book and give each child’s age and weight so you get the right seat.
How much does a child car seat cost in Bali?
Usually about IDR 25,000–75,000 per day, and some rentals include it free on weekly or monthly rentals.
Is it legal to drive in Bali without a child seat?
Indonesian law requires seat belts but enforcement of child-seat use is weak. It is still strongly recommended for safety, especially on busy and hilly roads.
Can a private driver in Bali supply a car seat?
Yes, if requested in advance. Ask the driver to install it before pickup and check it yourself before setting off.
