Renting a scooter in Candidasa: what to know

Candidasa sits on Bali's east coast between Padang Bai and Amlapura. It's far more relaxed than South Bali: small seafront hotels, a lotus lagoon in the middle of town and little islands just offshore. Public transport is limited and the sights are spread out, so scooter rental in Candidasa is the most practical way to explore East Bali at your own pace.

Highlights include Tenganan Pegringsingan, a Bali Aga village known for its double-ikat gringsing weaving; White Sand Beach (Pasir Putih, also called Virgin Beach) with clear water; and Bukit Asah near Bugbug, a grassy clifftop with sea views. Further east are Taman Ujung and Tirta Gangga, two water palaces built by the Karangasem royal family.

The roads to White Sand Beach and Bukit Asah are narrow, steep and partly bumpy. A 110cc scooter manages solo, but for two people we recommend a Honda Vario or Yamaha NMAX. Use both brakes together on the way down to the beach, and park in the attended car parks.

Candidasa is also close to Padang Bai harbour (about 20 minutes), the departure point for boats to the Gilis and Lombok, so many travellers spend a night or two here before crossing. Scooter rental in Candidasa starts at around IDR 70k per day. Local bikes are usually offered by hotels and homestays, with a limited choice of models. If you want a specific bike delivered to your hotel, book from South Bali through the SiapPergi catalogue. For the airport transfer with luggage, a car with driver is easier, then use the scooter for day trips.
