Lempuyang Temple (Gates of Heaven) by Scooter: Route & Tips

The “Gates of Heaven” at Pura Lempuyang, with Mount Agung framed between the split gate, is one of Bali’s most photographed spots. It’s a long way east of the tourist areas — and a great scooter adventure if you plan it right.

How far is it?

  • From Ubud: about 2–2.5 hours.
  • From Canggu or Seminyak: about 3 hours or more.
  • From Amed or Tirta Gangga: about 30–45 minutes.

From South Bali it’s a very long day by scooter. Consider staying a night in Amed or Sidemen and visiting early the next morning, or going by car with driver — see car rental with driver.

When to leave

The famous photo spot has a queue, sometimes very long by mid-morning. Arrive as early as you can — sunrise or soon after gives the best chance of clear views of Mount Agung before clouds build up.

The route

From Ubud, ride east via Gianyar and Klungkung (Semarapura), then along the coast or through the hills towards Karangasem and Abang. The final stretch climbs steeply. The roads are generally good but winding; a bigger scooter is more comfortable for two people.

Parking and the shuttle

You’ll usually park at the lower area and take a local shuttle up the steep road to the temple entrance. Entry involves a donation or ticket, and sarongs are available. Check current arrangements locally — they change from time to time.

Dress code and respect

Lempuyang is a sacred temple. Cover shoulders and knees, wear a sarong, and follow any instructions from temple staff. Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter Balinese temples.

Make it a day: nearby stops

  • Tirta Gangga water palace — 20–30 minutes away.
  • Taman Ujung water palace near Amlapura.
  • Sidemen valley on the way back to Ubud.
  • Amed for snorkelling and the coast road.

Safety

  • Fill up before leaving the main towns.
  • Start early and be back before dark.
  • Take breaks — 2+ hours on a scooter each way is tiring.
  • Bring a raincoat in the wet season; East Bali storms can be heavy.

Book a bike

For a ride this long, rent an NMAX or PCX. The SiapPergi catalogue delivers in Ubud and across Bali — pay after checking the bike.
