Renting a scooter in Karangasem: what to know

Karangasem is the regency at Bali's eastern tip, with Amlapura as its capital. Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano, dominates the landscape. The area holds beautiful heritage from the Karangasem kingdom, traditional villages and a quiet coastline. Sights are spread out and public transport is limited, so scooter rental in Karangasem makes travel much easier.

In Amlapura you'll find Puri Agung Karangasem, the royal palace with a mix of Balinese, European and Chinese architecture. About 15 minutes south is Taman Ujung, a water palace with large ponds and bridges, while Tirta Gangga to the north is famous for its pools and statues. Lempuyang temple and its "Gates of Heaven" are about 30 minutes from Amlapura.

Many roads in Karangasem are steep and winding, especially towards Lempuyang and Amed. With a passenger choose an NMAX, PCX or ADV 160. Ride slowly through villages — dogs and children are often on the road.

From the airport, Amlapura is about 2–2.5 hours via the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass and Candidasa. Most travellers fold Karangasem into a few days in East Bali, staying in Candidasa, Amed or Sidemen. See Lempuyang by scooter.
