Medewi Surf Trip from Canggu: By Scooter or Car, Balian Stop & Tips

Short answer: Medewi is about 2–2.5 hours west of Canggu along the main Denpasar–Gilimanuk highway. Go by scooter with a surf rack if you’re an experienced rider travelling light, or by car (or car with driver) if you have several boards, luggage or friends. Stop at Balian on the way, stay at least one or two nights, and surf the long left in the morning before the wind.

When Canggu’s line-ups get too crowded, surfers head west. Medewi is a rural fishing village with rice fields running down to a cobblestone point and one of Bali’s longest left-hand waves — mellow, long rides that suit intermediates and longboarders as well as better surfers when it’s bigger.

Getting there

Leave Canggu early (before 7 am) to get through Kerobokan and Tabanan before traffic builds.

Scooter or car?

Scooter with a surf rack

Cheap, flexible and fun — but this route is the main highway to Java, full of trucks and buses overtaking at speed. Ride only if you’re experienced, keep left, and never try to overtake a truck on a blind bend. Choose a scooter with enough power — a Vario 160 or NMAX — and a solid side rack. Car

Balian: the halfway stop

Balian Beach, at the mouth of the Balian river, has a fun peak with lefts and rights, a black-sand beach and a handful of surf stays. It’s a great place to break the trip or surf an evening session. The river mouth can carry debris after rain — check conditions locally.

Surfing Medewi

• The wave: a long left breaking over rocks and cobblestones; rides can be very long on a good swell.
• Best time of day: early morning, before the onshore wind picks up.
• Season: works best in the dry season (around April–October) with south-west swells.
• Entry: paddle out from the rocks — reef booties help.
• Crowd: much quieter than the Bukit or Canggu, though local surfers and surf camps are in the water. Respect priority.

Where to stay and practical tips

• Small surf lodges, homestays and a few villas near the point — book ahead in peak months.
• Fuel and cash: fill up in Tabanan or at the larger stations along the highway; ATMs are limited in the village.
• Don’t ride back at night — the highway is dark and the trucks don’t slow down. See night riding.
