Renting a scooter in Nusa Lembongan: what to know
Nusa Lembongan is a small island south-east of Bali, next to Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida. Fast boats from Sanur take ±30 minutes and usually land on the beach at Jungutbatu or Mushroom Bay, so you step off straight into shallow water. The island is small enough to explore in a day, but the sights are too spread out and hilly to walk between in the midday heat. That is why scooter rental in Nusa Lembongan is how most visitors get from Jungutbatu to Devil's Tear, Dream Beach or Mangrove Point.
Roads on Lembongan are mostly narrow concrete or asphalt with steep climbs and descents, especially between Jungutbatu and Lembongan village and up to Panorama Point. Some stretches are sandy and bumpy. Traffic is mainly scooters and small trucks rather than cars. To reach Ceningan you ride across the Yellow Bridge, a narrow crossing for pedestrians and scooters only. The usual rental bikes are the Honda Scoopy and Vario; a 110–125cc automatic is enough, as long as the brakes and tyres are in good shape.
Prices start from about IDR 80,000 per day, a little above the mainland because bikes and spare parts arrive by boat. The scooter is usually handed over near the beach where the boats land or delivered to your guesthouse. Check brakes, tyres and lights carefully and photograph the bike before you ride. Fuel is mostly sold in bottles at warungs, so fill up before heading over to Ceningan.
Riding times from Jungutbatu: Mangrove Point ±10–15 minutes, Devil's Tear and Dream Beach ±15–20 minutes, the Yellow Bridge ±15–20 minutes and the Blue Lagoon on Ceningan ±25–30 minutes. One or two days is enough to see Lembongan; if you plan to hop to the bigger neighbour, read our Nusa Penida scooter rental page, as the roads there are much tougher.
Parking at Devil's Tear, Dream Beach and the Blue Lagoon is usually run by locals for a small fee. Do not stand close to the cliff edge at Devil's Tear when the swell is big. In the rainy season (roughly November to March) mossy concrete on the hills becomes very slippery. Medical facilities on the island are limited, so read our Bali scooter safety tips before you cross.
If you need a bike on the mainland before or after your trip, see scooter rental in Sanur, close to the fast boat harbour. Foreign riders still need a home licence plus an International Driving Permit, and a helmet is a must even for short rides.
