Scooter Rental in Bali for Tall Riders (180 cm+): Which Bike Actually Fits

Short answer: if you’re under about 175 cm, almost every Bali rental scooter fits. Between 175 and 185 cm, a Vario 160 or Yamaha NMAX is far more comfortable than a Scoopy. Above 185 cm, go straight for an NMAX, PCX or ADV 160 — your knees, back and passenger will thank you.

Most rental fleets in Bali are built around small automatic scooters designed for Indonesian riders, who are on average around 160–170 cm. That’s perfect for zipping through Canggu, but if you’re 190 cm with long legs, a Honda Scoopy can feel like riding a children’s bike: knees touching the handlebars, feet hanging off the floorboard and steering that bumps into your thighs on every tight turn. Here’s how to pick a scooter that actually fits.
Why fit matters more than looks
A scooter that’s too small isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s less safe. When your knees hit the handlebars you can’t turn the bars fully at low speed, which is exactly when you need it: U-turns in narrow lanes, parking, and squeezing between cars. You also sit too far back on the seat, which takes weight off the front wheel and makes braking in the wet less stable. After an hour, a cramped position means a sore lower back and tired wrists, and tired riders make mistakes.
Which scooter fits your height
| Your height | Good choices | Typical price / day |
|---|---|---|
| Under 175 cm | Scoopy, Honda BeAT, Fazzio, Vario 125 | IDR 70k–120k |
| 175–185 cm | Vario 160, NMAX, Aerox | IDR 80k–180k |
| 185–195 cm | NMAX, PCX 160, Honda ADV 160 | IDR 120k–200k |
| 195 cm + | PCX or ADV 160; XMAX 250 for experienced riders | IDR 130k–400k |
Prices are typical market ranges and rise in peak season. Weekly and monthly rates are cheaper per day.
The NMAX: the tall rider’s default
The Yamaha NMAX has a long flat seat, forward footrests you can stretch your legs onto and a wide handlebar that clears your knees even at full lock. It’s the bike most tall travellers end up on, and there are thousands in Bali, so availability is good. Compare it with the PCX in NMAX vs PCX.
The PCX and ADV 160
The Honda PCX has a slightly roomier rider area than the NMAX and a smooth, quiet engine. The ADV 160 sits higher, with longer suspension — great if you’re very tall and plan rough roads in East or North Bali, but its seat height makes it a stretch for a shorter passenger to climb on.
Avoid if you’re over 185 cm
The Scoopy, BeAT and Fazzio. They’re lovely bikes, but the distance between the seat and handlebars is short. You’ll ride with your knees splayed out, which is tiring and catches on cars in traffic.

The 60-second fit test at handover
- Sit on the bike with both feet down. You should be able to put both feet flat with a slight bend in the knee.
- Turn the handlebars fully left and right. If the bars hit your knees, ask for a bigger bike — don’t accept it.
- Put your feet where they’ll rest while riding. On an NMAX or PCX you should be able to stretch them forward.
- Check the mirrors. Tall riders often see only their own shoulders; adjust them outward.
- With a passenger: sit together and turn the bars again. Two tall people on a Vario 125 is a no.

Tall couples and riding two-up
If both of you are over 175 cm, rent an NMAX or PCX — full stop. A small scooter with two tall adults puts the passenger half off the back of the seat, overloads the rear suspension and makes the front light on hills, which you’ll feel on the climbs to Ubud or Uluwatu. Read scooter rental for couples for more tips.
Helmets for big heads
Standard rental helmets are usually M or L. If your head is larger, a small helmet sits high and won’t protect you properly — and it will give you a headache after 20 minutes. Ask for an XL or XXL helmet when you book, so the rental brings the right size with the bike. A properly fitted helmet is snug, doesn’t rotate when you shake your head and has the strap fastened. See Bali helmet law.
If you’re very tall: consider a car for long days
For a full-day trip to the north or east, a car with a driver may simply be more comfortable for a 195 cm body than six hours on any scooter. Many travellers combine both: a scooter for daily life in Canggu or Uluwatu, plus a car with driver for one or two big sightseeing days. See scooter or car rental in Bali?

Frequently asked questions
What is the best scooter in Bali for tall riders?
The Yamaha NMAX is the most popular choice for riders around 180–195 cm, followed by the Honda PCX 160 and ADV 160. They have more legroom and the handlebars clear your knees.
Can a 190 cm person ride a Scoopy?
You can, but it is cramped: knees often hit the handlebars at full lock, which makes slow turns awkward. A bigger scooter such as an NMAX or PCX is safer and more comfortable.
Can I get an XL helmet with my rental?
Yes, many rentals have XL or XXL helmets, but you should ask when you book so the right size is delivered with the scooter.
Is a bigger scooter harder to ride?
The NMAX and PCX are heavier than a Scoopy but still automatic and easy to ride. If you are a complete beginner, practise slow turns in a quiet street first.
