Renting a Car in Bali in the Rainy Season: Floods, Safety & Smart Planning

Short answer: Bali’s rainy season (roughly November to March) brings short, very heavy downpours, usually in the afternoon and evening. A car keeps you dry, safe and flexible when the sky opens — and wet-season rates are often lower. Check the tyres, wipers and air-con at handover, avoid flooded lanes and plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning.

The rainy season is still a lovely time to visit: everything is green, there are fewer tourists and prices drop. But riding a scooter through a tropical downpour with water running ankle-deep across the road is no fun, and it’s when many scooter accidents happen. That’s why lots of visitors rent a car for at least part of their stay.

What the rain is really like

  • Mornings are often sunny and clear.
  • Afternoons and evenings bring heavy, sometimes intense storms lasting 30 minutes to a few hours.
  • December to February are usually the wettest months; some days it rains on and off all day.
  • The highlands (Ubud, Bedugul, Munduk, Kintamani) get more rain and fog than the coast.

Flood-prone spots to know

Drainage in South Bali can’t always cope. Water collects quickly in parts of Kuta and Legian, lower Seminyak, Sunset Road, the lanes of Canggu and Berawa, and around Denpasar. Flooding usually drains within an hour or two. If a road looks like a river, wait it out in a café rather than driving through — water can hide deep potholes and open drains.

Car vs scooter in the wet

CarScooter
Comfort in a downpourDry, air-conditionedSoaked, even with a poncho
Safety on wet roadsMuch betterSlippery paint, sand and potholes

Many travellers combine both: a scooter for quick morning errands and a car for afternoons, evenings and longer trips. See scooter or car? and riding a scooter in the rainy season.

Check these on your rental car

  1. Tyres: visible tread on all four. Bald tyres aquaplane easily.
  2. Wipers: test at full speed with washer fluid — worn blades smear and blind you at night.
  3. Air-con and demister: windows fog up instantly in humid rain; the A/C must clear them.
  4. Lights: headlights, brake lights and hazard lights all working.
  5. Leaks: look for damp carpets or water stains — and photograph them so you aren’t blamed later.

Driving tips in heavy rain

  • Slow down and double your following distance.
  • Watch for scooters pulling over suddenly to put on ponchos or shelter under shop fronts.
  • Use dipped headlights, not hazards, while moving.
  • Avoid steep mountain roads in storms — landslides and fallen branches happen on the routes to Kintamani, Bedugul and Munduk.
  • Don’t drive through deep water. If it’s above the middle of the wheel, turn around.
  • Plan sightseeing early and be back before the afternoon storms.

Save with low-season rates

Outside Christmas–New Year, the wet season is low season. Rentals are more open to discounts, especially on weekly and monthly rentals. A city car or Avanza for a month can cost less than a few weeks of taxis. Compare prices in car rental prices per day.
