Canggu is scooter country — but if you’re travelling as a family, with surfboards, or just don’t want to ride, a car makes a lot of sense. It also comes with Canggu-specific challenges: narrow lanes, legendary traffic jams and villas down alleys a car can’t enter. This guide covers what to rent, what it costs and how to make it work.

Car rental prices in Canggu

• City car (Brio, Agya): about IDR 200–300k per day self-drive.
• 7-seater (Avanza, Xenia): about IDR 250–350k self-drive, IDR 550–700k with driver.
• Xpander: about IDR 350–450k self-drive.
• Innova: about IDR 450–650k self-drive, IDR 750–950k with driver.

Self-drive or with driver?

For getting around Canggu itself — Berawa, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Pererenan — self-drive works if you’re comfortable with tight streets and scooters on all sides. For day trips to Ubud, Bedugul or Uluwatu, a driver is often the better deal: they know the shortcuts, handle the parking and you can actually look out of the window. More in car rental with driver.

Canggu traffic: what to expect

Canggu’s main roads were built for village traffic. The stretch through Batu Bolong, Berawa and the shortcut roads gets badly congested, especially from about 4 to 7 pm. Tips:

• Plan longer trips for the morning.
• Use Google Maps’ traffic layer — a 5 km trip can take 10 or 40 minutes depending on the time.
• Expect scooters filtering on both sides. Check mirrors constantly and indicate early.
• Read driving on the left in Bali if you’re from the US or Europe.

Parking in Canggu

Before booking, ask your villa: “Is there space to park a car, and can a car reach the gate?” Some villas in Canggu are on lanes only a scooter can enter. Beach clubs and popular cafés usually have car parking with an attendant (IDR 5–10k), but spaces fill up at sunset.

A car or a scooter?

Day trips from Canggu by car

• Tanah Lot — 30–45 minutes; go for sunset.
• Ubud — 1–1.5 hours; rice terraces, Monkey Forest, waterfalls.
• Jatiluwih & Bedugul — 1.5–2 hours; terraces, lakes and Ulun Danu temple.
• Uluwatu — 1–1.5 hours; beaches and the cliff temple.

What you need

• Home driving licence + International Driving Permit (car category) for self-drive. See IDP for Bali.
