Start a Scooter Rental Business in Bali 2026: Costs & Profit

Updated

Bali welcomes millions of visitors a year, plus digital nomads, seasonal workers and students who stay for months. Nearly all of them need transport, and an automatic scooter is the easiest option. That is why a scooter rental business in Bali attracts everyone from locals with two spare bikes to investors building fleets of dozens. Competition is fierce, though. This guide walks through startup capital, payback maths per bike, fleet choice, legal basics, insurance, maintenance, staffing, pricing, seasonality and getting online. All figures are planning estimates, not guarantees.

Startup capital

ScenarioFleetApprox. capitalNotes
Small start3–5 used Scoopy/VarioRp 50–100MCan run from home
Medium8–10 new bikes, Scoopy/Vario/NMAX mixRp 220–320MNeeds parking and one staff member
Serious20+ bikes incl. NMAX/PCXRp 500M+Needs a garage, delivery staff and admin

On top of bikes, budget for decent helmets (about two per bike), raincoats, disc locks, phone holders, surf racks near the beaches, registration costs, a website and marketing, and a cash reserve covering at least two or three months of running costs for the slow start and low season.

Payback maths for one Scoopy

Assumptions, deliberately simple and conservative:

  • Purchase price of a new Scoopy: about Rp 23 million (depends on dealer and variant).
  • Average effective rate: Rp 80,000 a day across daily, weekly and monthly rentals.
  • Running costs: about Rp 400,000 a month per bike for oil and servicing, tyre and brake reserve, annual tax spread monthly, helmet replacement and a share of delivery and website/marketing costs.

Utilisation is the share of days in a month the bike is actually rented (30-day month):

UtilisationDays rentedRevenue/monthCosts/monthNet/monthPayback
40%12Rp 960,000Rp 400,000Rp 560,000±41 months
60%18Rp 1,440,000Rp 400,000Rp 1,040,000±22 months
80%24Rp 1,920,000Rp 450,000Rp 1,470,000±16 months

The formula: revenue = days rented × rate; net = revenue − costs; payback = bike price ÷ monthly net. At 60%: 18 × Rp 80,000 = Rp 1,440,000, minus Rp 400,000 = Rp 1,040,000, and Rp 23,000,000 ÷ Rp 1,040,000 ≈ 22 months. Two things to remember: the bike still has resale value after two or three years, and utilisation is the lever that matters most. Moving from 40% to 60% almost halves the payback time. These numbers exclude your own salary, premises rent and any loan interest.

Choosing your fleet

  • Honda Scoopy and Yamaha Fazzio: top sellers for solo travellers, cheap to buy, parts everywhere.
  • Honda Vario 125/160: versatile, good two-up and on hills; great for Ubud and Uluwatu.
  • Yamaha NMAX and Honda PCX: higher rates (an NMAX earns about Rp 120,000–180,000 a day or Rp 2.3–3.2 million a month) and popular with couples and long-stayers, but more capital per unit. See demand on our NMAX rental page.
  • XMAX and KLX: touring and off-road niche at Rp 250,000–400,000 a day; a complement, not the backbone.

A mix of roughly 60% Scoopy/Fazzio/Vario and 40% NMAX is a safe start. Match your area: Canggu and Seminyak have many monthly renters, Kuta lots of short stays, Uluwatu needs surf racks.

Rules change and vary by regency, so treat this as orientation and confirm details with the OSS system and your local government offices:

  • NIB business registration through OSS at oss.go.id; relatively simple for small Indonesian-owned businesses.
  • KBLI code: motor vehicle rental falls within the KBLI 771xx group; check the most suitable code for motorbike rental in OSS when registering.
  • Properly registered vehicles with active STNK and paid tax for every unit.
  • Tax registration appropriate to your size, and good relations with the local banjar.

Foreign investors face different structures and requirements, so get professional advice before investing.

Insurance and risk

Many small rentals do not insure their bikes, but theft and accidents are real risks. Some insurers offer motorbike policies; read carefully whether commercial rental use is covered, because some policies exclude it. Reduce risk with GPS trackers on high-value units, a fair written damage and deposit policy, licence checks for every renter and filmed handovers.

Maintenance and staff

Rental scooters work far harder than private ones. Change oil every 2,000–3,000 km, check brakes, tyres and lights at every return, and wash bikes before each delivery. A regular partner workshop usually means better prices and faster turnaround. Up to five bikes, an owner can handle everything; beyond ten you need at least one person for delivery and light maintenance, and someone who answers WhatsApp fast. Response speed often decides who wins the booking.

Pricing and seasonality

Benchmarks per day: Scoopy Rp 70,000–100,000, Vario Rp 80,000–120,000, NMAX Rp 120,000–180,000, PCX Rp 130,000–200,000. High season is usually July–August and December–January plus public holidays; raise prices sensibly and prioritise multi-day rentals. In low season, push monthly packages to digital nomads to keep utilisation up. Avoid price wars: rentals that go too cheap cut corners on helmets and maintenance and lose their reviews.

Going online

Most travellers search “scooter rental Canggu” or “sewa motor Ubud” on Google before they arrive, and the rentals on Google Maps and page one get the bookings. Complete your Google Business Profile, ask every happy customer for a review, use WhatsApp Business with a catalogue, partner with nearby villas, and build a bilingual website with model and area pages, clear prices and a WhatsApp button.
